"I feel blessed to be part of such a great program and coaching staff at TCU," said Hassell. "Great things are happening here, and I look forward to contributing in any way I can."
While at Charleston Southern, Hassell was responsible for working with the infielders and hitters as well assisting with the recruiting efforts.
Prior to his time at CSU, the Wisconsin native was the head coach for the Solingen Alligators, a team in Germany's highest baseball league. Hassell led the team to its first ever German National Championship, which is Germany's highest baseball honor. His squad also captured the Bundesliga North Division title which was also a first for the Alligator organization and ended the season with a 37-8 record.
Hassell has also coached at the collegiate level as an assistant. Most recently at Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in California, and at his alma mater, Carroll College in Wisconsin.
In addition, Coach Hassell has worked with Athletes in Action as a head summer league coach. In the 2004 summer, he led the Alfred A's to a 25-17 record in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. In the summer of 2003, Hassell led a team that competed in Central America for the summer. In 2002, he was the assistant coach of the AIA team that competed in the M.I.N.K. League.
Throughout his coaching endeavors, Hassell has mentored over 25 players that have been drafted by Major League Baseball.
Coach Hassell played his college ball at Carroll College in Wisconsin where he graduated with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. He set several school records including most hits in a season while batting .415 in his senior campaign. He also reached base 19 consecutive at bats without recording an out, which then tied a national Division 3 record.
Coach Hassell is engaged to be married to Kendra Anderson, an assistant womens basketball coach at Charleston Southern University.
"We are really excited to add Derek Hassell to the baseball staff and welcome him to TCU," said Schlossnagle. "He comes highly recommended, has great character and values and should be a tremendous addition."
