Varsity Rallies To Defeat Alumni, 8-6

FORT WORTH, Texas - The varsity squad rallied with seven unanswered runs in the last three innings to defeat the alumni squad 8-6 Saturday afternoon in the annual Alumni Game. Brett Johnson provided the offensive fireworks for the varsity squad with a home run and a double as part of a three-hit afternoon.

Trey Teakell allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of work. Kevin Allen surrendered three runs on three hits, walked three and struck out three. Jerrick Suiter gave up a hit, walked one and struck out one in his two innings of work. Tyler Duffie and Justin Scharf combined to pitch a scoreless eighth and Scharf pitched a perfect ninth inning. Kaleb Merck pitche a perfect tenth inning to close out the game.

Jake Arrieta started for the Alumni and went two innings. He allowed a run on three hits, walked two and struck out one. Sam Demel gave up a hit and struck out one in his lone inning of work. Matt Purke tallied a pair of strikeouts around a hit in one inning pitched. Steven Maxwell struck out the side around a pair of walks in the fifth. Greg Holle pitched a perfect sixth inning. Lance Broadway and Brad Furnish were each touched for three runs in their inning of work. Erik Miller gave up a run on two hits in his inning of work.

Jerome Pena led off the top of the first with a single and moved to third on a one-out single by Chad Huffman. Trey Teakell worked out of the jam, getting Curry to bounce into the inning-ending double play.

Brance Rivera jumped all over the first offering he saw from Jake Arrieta and delivered a triple down the right field line. Jason Coats drove a single up the middle to give the Varsity squad the early 1-0 advantage.

The Alumni squad stormed back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning. Taylor Featherston reached on a one-out infield single and scored on a Keith Conlon single. An error on a ball hit by Clint Arnold allowed the Alumni to take the lead.

Arrieta worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second and the Alumni took the momentum into the top of the third and tacked a run on to their lead. With the bases loaded and two out, a wild pitch allowed Steven Trout to score for a 3-1 Alumni lead.

Bryan Holaday tacked on to the Alumni's lead with a two-run home run to left field that made it a 5-1 contest. They added a run with two outs to open up a 6-1 advantage.

The varsity squad began to creep back into the game in the bottom of the seventh when Brett Johnson hit a lead-off home run off of Lance Broadway. After two walks, a miscue on the infield allowed Davy Wright to come home to make it a 6-3 contest. Axel Johnson followed with a run-scoring single to pull the Frogs within two, 6-4.

The varsity squad completed the comeback in the bottom of the eighth as they pushed across three runs on three doubles. Brett Johnson tied the game at six with his second hit of the game and scored to give the Frogs a 7-6 lead on a double by Axel Johnson. They tacked on another run in the ninth to account for the final score.
