Varsity Rallies To Top Alumni, 5-3

Kyle Von Tungeln home run in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and helped propel the TCU Varsity baseball team to a 5-3 win over the Alumni squad Saturday afternoon. The game capped an outstanding weekend for the Horned Frog baseball team as they gear up for the opening of the 2011 campaign on Friday, Feb. 18 against Kansas.
Matt Curry staked the Alumni squad to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Matt Carpenter doubled with two outs in the inning and Curry followed with an opposite field shot down the left field line for the two run lead.
The Varsity team wasted no time getting the game knotted at two. Jerome Pena worked a lead-off walk and Taylor Featherston followed with a single to right. Jason Coats lined a triple into the gap in left center to tie the game.
After a scoreless second inning, Hunt Woodruff put the Alumni back on top with a solo home run.
In back-to-back innings, the Alumni posed a threat, but each time the Varsity squad worked out of the jam. In the sixth, the Alumni loaded the bases on a hit and two walks, but Tyler Duffie struck out Matt Vern looking to end the inning. In the seventh, Matt McGuirk lined a one-out triple down the right field line. Stefan Crichton buckled down and got two ground outs to end the threat.
Kyle Von Tungeln gave the Varsity squad its first lead of the afternoon with a one-out home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Davy Wright padded the Frog lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Josh Elander was plunked to open the frame. Off the bench, Wright delivered a double to the right center field gap to put the home team up 5-3.
Matt Purke started for the Frogs and allowed three runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out five. Andrew Mitchell tossed two scoreless frames with a walk and two strikeouts. Duffie allowed a hit, walked two and struck out one in his lone inning of work. Crichton picked up the victory for the Varsity squad. He threw two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out one.
Appearing for the Alumni Saturday afternoon was Bryan Kervin, Stuart Musslewhite, Bryan Holaday, Kyle Dahlberg, Matt Carpenter, Matt Curry, Rudy Rivera, Matt Vern, Keith Conlon, Brett Medlin, Clint Arnold, Austin Adams, Matt McGuirk, Ben Carruthers, Brad Rogers, Hunt Woodruff, Andrew Walker, Greg Holle, Tyler Lockwood, Brad Furnish, Dillon Farish, Taylor Cragin, Chad Durham and Eric Marshall.
TCU will open the 2011 campaign at home Friday night when it hosts Kansas. First pitch will be 6:30 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
