Feb. 18, 2006
EDINBURG, Texas - The No. 18 TCU Horned Frogs pounded out 15 hits en route to a 9-4 win over UT-Pan Am at the Al Ogletree Classic in Edinburg. The Frogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Jake Arrieta earned his second win of the season and Matt Carpenter drove in four runs with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. In all, five Frogs recorded multi-hit contests.
Steven Trout and Bryan Kervin got the offense going in the first inning with back-to-back single. An error by the Broncs loaded the bases with one out and Matt McGuirk made it hurt with a two-RBI single to center field. A Carpenter sacrifice fly rounded out the scoring in the first.
TCU tacked on another run in the third inning, taking advantage of a lead-off single off the bat of Chad Huffman. Austin Adams drew the second of his three walks on the night to set up the RBI single from Carpenter making it a 4-0 game.
Jake Arrieta battled through his five innings of work, stranding six runners in the first four innings of the game. The Broncs had two runners on in each of the first two innings, but Arrieta struck out Lyndon Bartosh looking and got lead-off hitter Louie Alamia to ground out ending the threats.
In the fifth, both teams put two runs on the board. The Frogs got two runs on an Adams one out double that drove in Keith Conlon and McGuirk. Conlon and McGuirk reached on base hits and advanced 90 feet on a perfectly executed double steal. The Broncs scratched across two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-2 contest. They pulled a run closer in the sixth as they tallied a run on three hits.
TCU broke the game open in the seventh as they scored three runs on three hits. McGuirk blasted a one-out double and Adams walked. Again, the Frogs executed the double steal as pinch-runner Ryan Pack and Adams swiped third and second. Carpenter brought them home with his second hit of the night. Matt Vern reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a base knock from Hunt Woodruff to round out the Frogs scoring.
Arrieta struck out four and walked three in his 5.1 innings of work. Donald Furrow went 1.2 innings, allowing a run on three hits. He struck out one and walked one.
With the win, the Frogs ended a three-game losing streak to improve to 3-3 on the year. TCU will wrap up play in the Al Ogletree Classic Sunday morning when they face Stephen F. Austin. First pitch is slated for 10:00 a.m. Brad Furnish will take the mound for his second start of the season.
