Baseball Bounces Back With Big Win
Feb. 18, 2014
FORT WORTH - The 19th-ranked TCU baseball team bounced back with a 10-3 victory over Northern Colorado Tuesday night to wrap up a four-game homestand. Boomer White led the offensive charge with TCU's first home run of the season.
An outstanding effort on the mound was overshadowed by an offensive explosion that saw the Horned Frogs score 10 runs on 10 hits. Four pitchers combined to hold the Bears to three runs (one earned) on four hits to go along with a season-high 15 strikeouts. The quartet retired 11 of the final 12 batters in the game.
Jordan Kipper (1-0) made his TCU debut and tossed six innings. He gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out eight. Travis Evans and Brian Howard struck out all three batters they faced in the seventh and eighth. Brian Trieglaff surrendered a hit and struck out one in the ninth.
The Frogs opened the scoring in the third. Cody Jones took a pitch off the back to foot to earn a free pass to first base. He promptly swiped two bases and was standing on third with two outs when White launched his first home run of the season over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, TCU sent 10 men to the plate and scored five times to open up a 7-0 lead. Two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out. Kevin Cron chopped a double down the left field line to push the lead to 4-0. Derek Odell followed with an RBI single and scored on a grounder off the bat of Jeremie Fagnan. Kyle Bacak grounded out to drive in the fifth run of the inning.
Northern Colorado fought back in the top of the sixth as it took advantage of a pair of TCU miscues to score three runs. Landon Moseley got the Bears going with a one-out single. An error put runners on the corners with one out and Moseley scored easily on a double from Jake Ekman. Another error on a pick-off attempt allowed the second run to score. Nick Miller grounded out to pull the Bears within four, 7-3.
TCU answered back in the bottom of the frame, scoring twice to make it 9-3. Connor Castellano led off the inning with a base hit. Odell lined a two-out triple to center and scored on an errant throw back to the infield.
The Frogs closed out the scoring with a run in the eighth. Cron was hit by the pitch with one out and moved to second on Odell's third hit of the night. Trying to turn an inning-ending double play, the Bears saw the relay throw to first sail wide of the bag, allowing Cron to score the final run of the game.
TCU improves to 3-1 on the season. The Horned Frogs will hit the road for the first time this season this weekend when they take part in the Kleberg Bank Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Whataburger Field. The Frogs will renew rivalries with BYU in their opener on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. TCU will face the Islanders on Saturday at 6 p.m. before closing out the tournament against UTSA on Sunday at Noon.
