Feb. 22, 2014
CORPUS CHRISTI - After seeing its two-run lead disappear in the eighth, the 19th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth to pick up a 7-4 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Islanders rallied to tie the game. With one out, three straight batters reached on a hit, a walk and a hit batter. Alex Young got a big punch out for the second out before giving way to Riley Ferrell. Kyle Danford lined a single into right field to tie the game. Ferrell got a ground ball to end the inning.
TCU (5-1) wasted no time regaining the lead in the top of the ninth. With one out, Cody Jones worked a walk. He stole second and moved to third on an errant throw. Connor Castellano came through with a double to left to give the Frogs a 5-4 lead.
Boomer White followed with a walk. A stolen base for both Castellano and White had two in scoring position with two outs. Derek Odell served up a two-run single into left field to give the Frogs breathing room.
Ferrell (1-0) picked up his first career win after setting the side down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
TCU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as it took advantage of a lead-off hit batter. Cody Jones raced to third on a base hit from Castellano and scored on a ground out from White to put the Frogs on top.
The Islanders fought back and took the lead in the bottom of the third. Brandon Tierney led off with a base hit and was standing on third with two outs. The Frogs looked to be out of the inning on a high pop up on the infield. The ball dropped in fair territory and Tierney scored the tying run. Cody Stephens followed with a triple to left center to put the Islanders on top, 2-1.
After being held in check for four innings, the Frogs struck for three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth to regain the lead, 4-2. White started the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a single from Odell. Jerrick Suiter tied the game with a double to left. Dylan Fitzgerald put the Frogs on top with a single and Keaton Jones gave the Frogs an insurance run with a ground out, setting up the wild finish.
Preston Morrison was solid in the no-decision. He allowed just two unearned runs on five hits in seven innings of work. The junior didn't walk a batter and struck out two. He retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.
TCU will wrap play in the Kleberg Bank Classic Sunday afternoon at Noon against UTSA. Tyler Alexander will make his second career start for the Horned Frogs.
