Baseball Rallies For 10-8 Win Over Sam Houston State

Feb. 24, 2002

Box Score

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU baseball notched four eighth-inning runs to overcome Sam Houtson State's three runs in the top of the frame and propel the Horned Frogs to a 10-8 win over the Bearkats Sunday afternoon at TCU Diamond. The victory completed the Horned Frogs' two-game weekend sweep of Sam Houston.

After Sam Houston took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second inning, TCU (5-6) responded with three runs in the bottom of the stanza to take a 3-1 lead. The runs came courtesy of RBI from Frogs Justin Hatcher (Fort Worth, Texas/Brewer/Eastfield J.C.) and Marshall Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin), as well as an inning-extending error that scored Wilson from third.

Another Sam Houston error in the third allowed Horned Frog right fielder Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior/Creighton) to score one of his four runs on the afternoon, putting the Frogs up 4-1.

Sam Houston State (2-9) rallied for a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to go up 5-4, but TCU answered with single tallies in the sixth and seventh to retake the lead, 6-5. Trofholz's homer in the sixth and an RBI single from Chris Meeks (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood/Eastfield J.C.) accounted for the TCU scores.

The Bearkats notched the fourth lead change of the afternoon with three runs in the top of the eighth to take an 8-6 lead.

However, the Frogs claimed the last lead change of the game in the bottom of the frame, plating four runs on three hits to take the decisive 10-8 lead. It was Hatcher and Wilson again notching the big RBI with a double and triple, respectively. The Bearkats didn't help their own cause in the frame, committing three more errors to give them six for the game.

Senior pitcher Josh Gardner (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) picked up his first win of the season, pitching two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.

At the plate, Trofholz had a 4-for-4 effort to go along with the four runs scored to lead the Frogs.

TCU looks to maintain its winning ways when it welcomes Oklahoma to TCU Diamond Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m.

TCU's defense extended its streak of turning at least one double play in every game this year by spinning four DPs ... for the season, TCU has turned 21 DPs while their opponents have collected just five ... the win was Gardner's first in nearly two years, when he picked up a 7-5 victory at Texas Tech on March 28, 2000 ... Gardner lowered his 2002 ERA to 1.69, while opponents are hitting just .188 against the southpaw.
