Complete Effort Leads TCU To Victory
Feb. 26, 2013
DALLAS - A complete effort all around helped TCU find the win column as it defeated Dallas Baptist 6-1 Tuesday night at Horner Ballpark. Seven Horned Frogs tallied a hit and Trevor Seidenberger pitched six shutout innings to help lead the Frogs to victory.
Seidenberger was brilliant in his first start of the season as he cruised through six innings. The left-hander didn't allow any hits and faced just two batters over the minimum in his time on the mound. He gave up an unearned run, walked one and struck out six. Besides the walk, the only other batter to reach came on an error leading off the seventh.
TCU jumped on the board early in the contest and never looked back as it built a 5-0 lead through six innings. Derek Odell got things going with a one-out hit in the first. Kevin Cron executed a hit-and-run, doubling to right center to drive in Odell for a 1-0 lead.
The margin grew to two runs in the second inning. Paul Hendrix started the rally with a one-out single. A walk to Keaton Jones moved him to second and he scored easily on a base hit to right off the bat of Cody Jones.
Opportunities to blow the game open for TCU came and went as the game moved to the sixth inning. But that frame proved to be the magic inning as the Frogs sent eight men to the plate and scored three times to open up a five run lead.
Keaton Jones worked a walk to lead off the inning and moved to second on the second sacrifice bunt of the game from Kyle Bacak. Cody Jones beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners. A walk to Odell loaded the bases and Cron drove in his second run of the game with a grounder to short. A hit batter reloaded the bases for Brett Johnson and he came through with a two-run single through the right side for a 5-0 lead.
A lead off error in the seventh proved costly as the Patriots turned it into a run. The damage could have been worse as they had a run in and two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Derek Odell made a tough catch on a line drive and doubled off the runner at second for an unconventional 4-6 double play. A subsequent walk put runners on the corners, but Justin Scharf came on and got a big strikeout to end the frame.
TCU answered the Patriot run in the top of the eighth to regain the five-run advantage. Cody Jones slapped a bunt between the pitcher and catcher for a lead-off single. A base hit to center from Odell had runners on the corners with nobody out. Cron notched his third RBI of the game to drive in Jones.
The combination of Scharf and Andrew Mitchell retired the final six batters in order to help the Frogs earn the win. Scharf struck out two in 1 1/3 innings, while Mitchell fanned one in the ninth.
TCU improves to 1-6 on the season. The four-game road trip continues this weekend as the Horned Frogs head east to take on Jacksonville. First pitch Friday night is set for 5:30 p.m. (CST).
