Final Stats

FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 9 TCU Horned Frogs were solid in all facets of the game as they took the rubber game by an 8-1 score at No. 6 Cal State Fullerton to earn a split in the doubleheader. Kyle Winkler was dominating in his six innings of work to earn his second win of the season and Jason Coats went 4-for-5 with four runs scored.

Kyle Winkler was masterful in his six-plus innings of work. The sophomore allowed just one unearned run on four hits to go along with four strikeouts and one walk. Kaleb Merck was also solid in relief as he retired all five batters he faced in two innings of work. Eric Marshall put up a zero in the ninth to help the Frogs lock up the victory.

At the plate, Taylor Featherston was a big contributor with two hits and three runs driven in. Bryan Holaday pitched in with two hits and two runs driven in.

TCU jumped out to the early lead in the second inning. Jason Coats led off the inning with a base hit through the left side. A Matt Curry sacrifice fly and a wild pitch by Fullerton's Tyler Pill moved Coats to third. Joe Weik singled to left to give TCU a 1-0 lead.

An error to open the bottom half of the frame proved costly as the Titans tied the game at one. Cal State Fullerton would load the bases with nobody out, but Winkler got the job done, inducing a groundball doubleplay that tied the game, but more importantly got two outs. He got Anthony Hutting to fly out to end the inning without any further damage.

The Frogs batted around in the sixth inning and plated five runs to open up a 6-1 lead. Coats got things rolling with his second hit of the game to lead off the inning. Curry drew a walk and Brance Rivera laid down a perfect bunt for a single to load the bases with nobody out. Featherston broke the tie with a single up the middle. A sacrifice fly from Aaron Schultz gave TCU a 3-1 lead. Kyle Von Tungeln looped a single into center field to drive home Rivera. A two-run double from Holaday cleared the bases and opened up the big lead.

Another lead-off single resulted in another Horned Frog run as TCU extended its lead to 7-1. Coats singled for the third time in the game to lead off an inning. After two quick outs, Featherston delivered a big two-out base hit for his second RBI of the game.

Cal State Fullerton put together its first real threat in the seventh inning. The Titans singled and drew a walk to open the inning, ending a solid outing from Winkler. Merck drew the call in relief and got the job done. He induced a doubleplay off the bat of Hutting and got Austin Kingsolver to ground out to end the inning.

TCU tacked on another run in the top of the ninth, again taking advantage of a lead-off single from Coats. Curry doubled and Featherston sacrificed home the eighth run of the game for TCU for an 8-1 lead.

The Frogs improve to 5-1 on the season. They return home briefly on Tuesday to host UT San Antonio at 6:30 p.m. before hitting the road for four more games.
