TCU Falters in Loss to Sam Houston State
Feb. 28, 2014
HOUSTON - No. 12 TCU suffered a 9-4 setback to Sam Houston State in its opening game of the Houston College Classic Friday afternoon. Kevin Cron hit his first home run of the season for the Horned Frogs.
Brandon Finnegan (2-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out 11 in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Trey Teakell pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks. He recorded two strikeouts.
The Horned Frogs had the game's first scoring threat in the third. Keaton Jones led the frame off with a base hit. An error on a ball hit by Cody Jones put two on with only one out. Boomer White worked a two out walk to load the bases, but Bearkat starter Tyler Eppler got a ground ball to get out of the inning.
The Bearkats took the momentum and translated it into a three-run fourth. A one-out triple from Hayden Simerly got the Bearkats rolling. Corey Toups followed with an RBI-double to put Sam Houston State in front 1-0. A hit batter and base hit followed to load the bases with only one out. Back-to-back wild pitches gifted the Bearkats two more runs and they had a 3-0 lead after four innings.
TCU had opportunities to get back in the game in the fifth and sixth innings, but stranded five runners. In the sixth, two walks and a base hit had the bases loaded with one out, but Eppler again wiggled off the hook on a fly ball to center.
Sam Houston State found its offensive groove in the final three innings as it scored a pair of runs in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to open up a commanding 9-0 lead. Jake MacWilliam drove in three of the six runs with a lead-off home run in the seventh and a two-out base hit in the ninth.
The Frogs tried to fight back in the bottom of the ninth with four runs, but the deficit was too large to overcome. With one on and one out, Derek Odell singled to put two runners on. Kevin Cron launched his first home run of the season to left field for a three-run blast. Garrett Crain pinch hit and was hit by the pitch. Jerrick Suiter followed with a double. Keaton Jones grounded out to drive in the fourth run of the inning.
TCU falls to 6-3 on the season. The Horned Frogs are back in action Saturday night when they play No. 10 Rice. First pitch against the Owls is set for 7:05 p.m. Preston Morrison will make his third start of the season.
