TCU Falls at Texas-Arlington, 7-3
March 1, 2002
ARLINGTON, Texas - TCU fell behind 4-2 after four innings and was not able to come back as three Texas-Arlington pitchers held the Horned Frogs to just eight hits in TCU's 7-3 loss at UTA Friday afternoon.
The Frogs did get on the board first, as Mike Settle (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day) drove in his team-leading 17th run of the season with a first-inning sacrifice fly, putting the Frogs up 1-0.
After UTA took its first lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, TCU (5-7) tied it at two in the top of the second. Back-to-back doubles from Will Lewis (Texarkana, Ark./Texarkana/Seminole J.C.) and Justin Hatcher (Fort Worth, Texas/Brewer/Eastfield J.C.), the latter scoring Lewis from second base, accounted for the Horned Frog tally.
However, UTA notched two runs on three hits in the fourth and added another run an inning later to take a 5-2 lead.
From there, it was the UTA pitching staff's show, as the Mavs' three hurlers didn't allow the Frogs a multi-hit inning after the second inning's two doubles.
TCU center fielder Marshall Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) cut the deficit to 5-3 in the seventh with a home run, his first of the season, to right field. But, UTA (7-7) plated two runs in the bottom of the stanza to put the game away.
Horned Frog starter Clayton Jerome (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) was tagged with his first loss of the season, allowing five runs in six innings of work.
TCU will have the weekend off, thanks to expected inclement weather in the Metroplex that has forced the postponement of Saturday and Sunday's games with the Mavericks. The Frogs return to action at 2:35 p.m. Monday for a rescheduled game with UTA at TCU Diamond.
