TCU Blasts Texas-Arlington, 23-12
March 4, 2002
FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU scored multiple runs in six of its eight innings at the plate as the Horned Frogs routed Texas-Arlington 23-12 Monday afternoon at TCU Diamond. Eight different Frogs drove in runs to start a stretch of eight games in nine days in style.
TCU (6-7) notched season highs in runs (23), hits (20), RBI (21), doubles (5), home runs (4) and total bases (39) in the offensive explosion. The runs were the most plated by the Horned Frogs since scoring a school-record 29 in a 29-4 win over Iowa State last March 15.
The Frogs opened an 11-4 lead after three innings by scoring two, six and three runs in each frame, respectively. A second-inning grand slam from Chris Meeks (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood/Eastfield J.C.), the first home run of his TCU career, highlighted the stretch.
While Texas-Arlington (7-8) tried to keep pace by scoring a total of five runs in the fifth and sixth innings, TCU plated five in each of those frames and added two more in the seventh to take a commanding 23-9 lead.
In all, the Frogs batted around the order in three different innings (second, fifth and sixth) and 10 TCU batters collected at least one hit.
A number of Horned Frogs enjoyed career days to lead the outburst. Meeks notched five RBI, Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior/Creighton) fell just a home run short of the cycle in a 5-for-5, four-RBI effort and Walter Olmstead (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur) plated four teammates while going 3-for-4 with a homer.
Other notable TCU efforts included Jake Duncan's (Marshall, Texas/Marshall/U. of Texas) 4-for-4, three RBI, four run performance, freshman Kyle Dahlberg's (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur) first-career home run in the sixth and Will Lewis' (Texarkana, Ark./Texarkana/Seminole J.C.) team high-tying four runs scored.
The Frogs turn right around and make a trip to Lubbock to face Texas Tech tomorrow and Wednesday. Game times are set for 7 p.m. Tuesday and 3 p.m. Wednesday at TTU's Dan Law Field.
