March 5, 2013
FORT WORTH - TCU allowed three runs late in the game as Arkansas-Pine Bluff rallied for a 6-4 win Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium. Jantzen Witte drove in three of the Horned Frogs' four runs.
The Frogs rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead after five innings. A lead-off walk to Dylan Fitzgerald in the third inning got things going for the Frogs. Cody Jones drew a one-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate. With two outs, Witte came through with a triple to deep right field, pulling the Frogs within one, 3-2.
TCU completed the comeback in the fifth inning as it took advantage of three free passes and an error to take a 4-3 lead. Kyle Bacak drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a bunt single from Cody Jones. An errant pick-off throw at second moved both runners up 90 feet. Boomer White was plunked on the arm to load the bases and Witte worked a walk to drive in the tying run. Kevin Cron followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Frogs on top.
Things unraveled for the Frogs in the seventh inning as the Golden Lions took advantage of a pair of hit batters, a passed ball and a wild pitch to score two two-out runs for a 5-4 lead.
With runners on the corners and nobody out, the Frogs went to the bullpen. Justin Scharf (0-2) got Dylan Calhoun to pop up a bunt for the first out then caught the runner at first leaning for the second out.
TCU couldn't close the inning as Kirby Campbell was hit by the pitch to keep the inning alive. A passed ball allowed the tying run to score and Isias Alcantar doubled to put the Golden Lions on top. They tacked on an unearned run in the eighth inning to push its lead to two.
The Golden Lions opened up a three-run lead in the second inning on six hits and an error. Warren Stehn gave UAPB the lead with a bases loaded single. Calhoun made it 2-0 with a two-out single to center and an error allowed the third run to score.
Stefan Crichton started for the Frogs, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in two innings of work. Trevor Seidenberger followed with two shutout innings. He allowed one hit and struck out four. Trey Teakell kept the Frogs in the game, pitching two scoreless innings. He struck out two and gave up one hit in his time on the mound.
TCU falls to 3-8 on the season. The homestand continues this weekend as the Horned Frogs host Pacific for a three-game series slated to begin Friday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
