Baseball Wins 10-Inning Thriller Over BYU, 3-2
March 7, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - Jake Duncan (Marshall, Texas/Marshall) ripped a single into right field in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring Chris Meeks (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood) from second base and giving TCU a 3-2 victory over BYU Friday evening at Lupton Stadium and Williams-Reilly Field. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for TCU (10-8) and evened the three-game series with BYU (5-9) at a game apiece.
With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Meeks lined a single into left center field to start the TCU rally. Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) put runners at first and second by beating out a bunt single, setting up Duncan's heroics.
However, the story of the game for the Horned Frogs were the pitching performances of Robbie Findlay (Toronto, Ontario/Michael Power), Zach Duncan (Marshall, Texas/Marshall) and Ryan Weems (Roswell, N.M./Goddard). Findlay made the first start of his TCU career a memorable one, allowing just an unearned run on five hits in five strong innings.
Duncan followed with the best performances of his young career as he tossed two perfect innings, striking out three along the way.
Weems went the rest of the way, allowing a run on two hits while also fanning three to up his season record to 2-1.
Second baseman Will Lewis (Texarkana, Ark./Texarkana) turned in his first multi-hit performance of the season, going 3-for-4 to lead the Frogs' offensive efforts. His two-out, two-run double in the second accounted for TCU's only runs in regulation play.
BYU's pitching combination of Paul Jacinto and Jason Garcia was also impressive in the loss. Jacinto allowed two runs on a six hits in hurling 124 pitches over eight innings. Garcia struck out four in 1.1 innings of relief, but allowed the three hits in the 10th in falling to 0-2 on the campaign.
The two squads will play the rubber match of their three-game set beginning at the originally scheduled time of 1 p.m. Saturday at Lupton Stadium.
