Demel leads Frogs to victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
March 11, 2006
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Behind a dominating pitching performance from Sam Demel, the Frogs picked up a 6-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in their second game of the Whataburger Classic. Demel went eight innings, surrendering just one run on six hits. He struck out 13 batters in the game. Steven Trout homered for the second straight contest and drove in two runs.
TCU broke a scoreless tie in the third inning as Trout clubbed a one-out home run over the left field fence. The homer spurred an offensive outburst by the Frogs as they scored two more times on four hits. Bryan Kervin followed the home run with a double down the left field line and scored on a Keith Conlon triple. An Andrew Walker base knock plated Conlon, giving TCU the 3-0 lead.
Demel was on cruise control, never really encountering any big threats from the Islanders. He pitched around a couple of one-out hits and a one-out walk through six innings. At one point, he had retired eight straight batters before giving up a lead-off double in the seventh. The double went for naught, as he retired the next three batters he faced, ending the inning.
The Frogs made it a 5-0 contest in the sixth inning, taking advantage of four walks and an error in the inning. Hunt Woodruff walked to open the frame and came around to score on an error by the shortstop. A bases-loaded walk to Andrew Walker drove in Kervin with the fifth run of the game.
Another unearned run crossed the plate in the seventh inning as the Islanders committed two errors to open the inning. A Trout ground out drove in TCU's final run of the game.
The only Islander run scored in the top of the eighth inning. A pinch-hit triple to open the frame and a ground out by Clint Galloway plated the Islander run.
Zach Ashwood pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Frogs. He induced a ground ball double play ball off the bat of catcher Josh Plumaj to end the game.
The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Frogs as they improve to 9-8 on the season. The Frogs will face nationally-ranked Arizona State in their final game of the Whataburger Classic. Brad Furnish will take the mound for TCU. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
