Final Stats

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't come up with the base hit that would tie the game as they dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 13 Arizona State in the Whataburger Classic. Brad Furnish tossed his second complete-game of the year. He struck out 10, while allowing three runs on eight hits.

Ryan Sontag led off the ball game with an opposite field home run to get the Sun Devils started. Another solo home run in the top of the fourth by Ike Davis gave ASU a 2-0 lead.

The Frogs had plenty of opportunities to break through with runs, but couldn't come up with the clutch hit to break the game open. Bryan Kervin hit a one-out double in the first inning and Chad Huffman walked to put two on. ASU starter Jeff Urlaub buckled down and got out of the inning unscathed.

A lead-off single off the bat of Matt Carpenter in the second went by the boards as did a lead-off single in the third by Steven Trout. Through five innings, the Frogs had left five runners on, including three in scoring position.

Arizona State tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of a two-out walk to Brett Wallace. After a stolen base, Wallace scored on a double off the bat of Eric Sogard.

The Frogs picked up their only run of the contest in the bottom of the inning. Huffman doubled to lead off the frame and moved to third on a Keith Conlon groundout. Carpenter battled through a 10-pitch at-bat and came through with an opposite field double to drive in Huffman.

Jerid Buttell walked to open the ninth inning, but was erased on a fielder's choice. A walk to Trout put two on with two outs and a misplay in the field by the shortstop loaded the bases for TCU with two outs. ASU reliever Brett Bordes got Huffman to ground out to the third baseman, ending the game.

The Frogs fall to 9-9 with the loss. They will remain on the road as they head to San Marcos, Texas for a rematch with the Texas State Bobcats. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
