Southern Miss Rallies To Take Series Finale, 14-7, In Extra Innings

Fort Worth, Texas - The No. 24 TCU Horned Frogs dropped the series finale to Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon in 10 innings. The Frogs used four pitchers in the tenth inning, but the Golden Eagles struck for seven runs on seven hits as they sent 12 men to the plate. For TCU, Chad Huffman and Bo Cogbill led the offense with three hits apiece.
TCU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a J.J. Estrada sacrifice fly. Stuart Musslewhite led off the game with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by Andrew Walker.
Southern Miss took the lead in the top of the second, plating two runs on three hits. An RBI-single by Beau Griffin knotted the game at one and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Coker gave the Golden Eagles the lead.
Shelby Ford led off the third inning with his third home run of the season to tie the game at two. Following two quick outs, the Frogs put together a string of three straight hits and a walk to take the lead. An Austin Adams tripled scored Huffman with the go-ahead run and Spencer Jackson extended his hit-streak to seven games with an RBI single to plate Adams.
The Frogs pushed the lead to 6-2 in the fourth scoring twice on three straight two out hits. Estrada doubled home Walker and scored on a Huffman single.
The Golden Eagles began to climb back in the game in the fifth with a solo home run by Marc Maddox and a three-run home run off the bat of Trey Sutton in the seventh to knot the game at six. Following the home run, TCU starter Sam Demel bore down and struck out the next three batters he faced to keep the game tied.
The Frogs regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a base knock by Musslewhite that scored Jackson who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
In the eighth inning, the Golden Eagles were able to tie the game at seven on a wild pitch from Shawn Ferguson that allowed Griffin to score.
A scoreless ninth inning propelled TCU into its second extra-inning game of the week. Chase Perry (0-1) came on in the tenth but was unable to record an out as they touched him for three hits and a misplayed sacrifice bunt to take the lead. Coker's base knock gave Southern Miss the lead.
The Frogs (14-7, 2-1 C-USA) will take a break from Conference USA action as they host Big 12 member Oklahoma on Tuesday night. First pitch at Lupton Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
