SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State Bobcats snapped TCU's nine-game winning streak, handing the TCU Horned Frogs an 8-4 loss Tuesday night. The Frogs had runners on base in every inning, but left 12 stranded in the game.
Trey Teakell (0-2) allowed two runs on two hits in two innings of work. He walked two and struck out one. Nick Frey gave up five runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks. Chris Murphy was touched for an unearned run on four hits. He walked one and struck out one. Jerrick Suiter pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, retiring all four batters he faced with two strikeouts.
Texas State struck for a pair of two-out runs in the second to take the early lead. Brooks Orton got a one-out single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. A base running miscue saw Orton erased at home as Keaton Jones fielded a grounder and threw home to cut down the runner. Cody Gambill was plunked on the next pitch and Isaac Nuti came through with a two-out triple to give the Bobcats the 2-0 lead.
TCU looked poised to cut into the Bobcat lead in the top of the third after Kyle Von Tungeln smoked a triple to right field with one out. Jason Coats worked a walk to put runners on the corners with one out. Bobcat starter Taylor Black induced an inning-ending double play ball off the bat of Josh Elander to get out of the jam, preserving the 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats added another two-out run to their lead in the third inning, taking advantage of a lead-off walk to Ben McElroy. Orton's second hit of the night made it a 3-0 deficit for the Frogs.
Texas State blew the game open in the fourth as they took advantage of two errors, a walk and a hit batter to plate four runs. Casey Kalenkosky and Jeff McVaney provided RBIs in the inning as the Bobcats opened up a 7-0 lead.
The Frog bats finally came to life in the fifth inning as they put a four spot on the board to get back within three, 7-4. Jones walked to open the inning and moved to third on a base hit by Von Tungeln. Coats got the Frogs on the board with a base hit up the middle and Josh Elander cleared the bases with a double. Derek Odell tripled with two outs to plate Elander with the fourth run of the inning.
A pair of errors in the seventh inning turned into another Texas State run. With Cody Lovejoy standing on second, the Frogs tried to execute a pick-off play, but the throw sailed into center field. Von Tungeln overran the ball, allowing Lovejoy to score to make it an 8-4 game.
TCU falls to 11-7 on the season. The Frogs will stay on the road as they travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for a three-game conference series at New Mexico. Friday's series opener is set for 8 p.m. (CST).
