March 23, 2014
FORT WORTH - Three big innings for Texas Tech sunk TCU as the Red Raiders took the series with a 12-2 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Horned Frogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Dylan Fitzgerald singled to right with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Boomer White lined a single to right. Fitzgerald avoided the tag at home to slide in safely for a 1-0 lead.
Tyler Alexander sailed through the first four innings. He didn't allow a hit and struck out a career six before giving up a lead-off single in the fifth.
Stephen Smith broke up the no-hitter to open the fifth. With one out, back-to-back bunt singles from Hunter Redman and Zach Davis loaded the bases. Devon Conley tied the game with a bouncer up the middle. Bryant Burleson cleared the bases with a three-run double to right center to give the Red Raiders a 4-1 lead.
In the sixth, Texas Tech sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five times as it opened up a commanding 9-1 lead. The big blow in the inning was another double from Burleson that drove in two.
TCU threatened in the sixth inning to cut into the deficit, but the Red Raiders pitched out of the jam. Cody Jones led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to third on a base hit from Fitzgerald. Corey Taylor came on in relief and pitched out of the jam without allowing a run to score.
The Frogs once again had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the eighth. Cody Jones started the two-out rally with a base hit. Walker Pennington followed with a double and a walk to Garrett Crain loaded the bases. Taylor wiggled off the hook as he got a fly ball to end the inning.
Three more Red Raiders crossed the plate in the ninth to put the game out of reach. TCU took advantage of a lead-off error in the ninth to score its second run of the game. Dylan Delso provided the RBI single to drive in Will Fox.
Alexander (3-2) takes the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck-out a career high seven. Jordan Kipper allowed two runs on two walks and Riley Ferrell surrendered a run on two hits in 2/3 of an inning. Alex Young struck out all three batters he face, while Travis Evans fanned two of the three he saw. Brian Trieglaff allowed three runs on three hits in the ninth.
With the loss, TCU falls to 13-10 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play. The Horned Frogs will play a midweek series against UT Pan American beginning Tuesday night at 6:30. Game two of the series will be Wednesday night at 6:30.
