TCU Bounces Back; Tops UTPA 11-0
March 25, 2014
FORT WORTH - The TCU baseball team exploded for nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to an 11-0 victory over UT Pan American Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium. Dylan Fitzgerald led the offensive attack with four RBIs.
Backed by the offensive onslaught, four Horned Frog pitchers combined to hold the Broncs to six hits. Only one runner reached third base in the contest. The defense was flawless and turned a pair of inning-ending double plays to limit the Broncs offensive chances.
Jordan Kipper (2-2) started and pitched five shutout frames. He fanned seven and walked two while giving up four hits. Alex Young faced the minimum with two strikeouts in two innings of work. Travis Evans and Riley Ferrell each pitched scoreless frames to close out the game.
TCU took control of the game in the second inning as it scored twice on a walk and two hits. Derek Odell worked a lead-off walk and moved to second on a passed ball. A Boomer White base hit put runners on the corners and Jeremie Fagnan gave the Frogs the lead with a line drive off the outstretched glove of the first baseman. After an error moved White to third, Keaton Jones executed a perfect safety squeeze to push the lead to 2-0.
The Broncs only real scoring threat came in the top of the fifth. Victor Garcia, Jr. led off the inning with a base hit and moved to third on a one-out single from Evan Mason. Kipper worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.
TCU batted around in the bottom of the inning and scored five times as they grabbed a 7-0 lead. A walk to Connor Castellano started a string of four straight batters reaching base. After a bunt single from Kyle Bacak, Cody Jones worked a walk to load the bases. On the first pitch he saw, Fitzgerald lined the offering just inside the right field foul line for a bases-clearing triple and a 5-0 lead. He scored on a two-out base hit from White. Fagnan doubled to cap the scoring in the frame.
Ten more men came to the plate in the sixth and four crossed the plate. Similar to the fifth, the first four batters reached. Fitzgerald drew the bases loaded walk and Kevin Cron grounded out to drive in the first two runs of the inning. Odell followed with a bouncer up the middle to drive in two more to account for the final score of 11-0.
With the victory, the Horned Frogs improve to 14-10 on the season. Game two of the midweek series is set for Wednesday night at 6:30. Brian Howard is slated to make his first career start on the mound for TCU.
