TCU Earns Series Win; Tops Texas Tech 7-3
March 30, 2013
LUBBOCK, Texas - TCU got hits from everybody in the lineup and earned its first Big 12 series win with a 7-3 victory over Texas Tech Saturday night. Six different Horned Frogs tallied an RBI in the game.
Nick Frey (1-1) was strong in middle relief as he was touched for just one run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings. The junior fanned four and walked one. He allowed just three base runners in his time on the mound. Trey Teakell pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits to secure the TCU win.
Brandon Finnegan lasted just 4 1/3 innings. A rough first inning saw him face seven batters, but he settled in to retire 10 straight before being lifted with two on and out out in the fourth. Finnegan allowed two runs on two hits, walked four and struck out seven in the no-decision.
Cody Jones beat out an infield single to lead off the game and got the Frogs rolling. A balk moved him to second and he was standing on third with one out after a Boomer White sacrifice. Jantzen Witte dropped a single into center field and Jones scored easily to put the Frogs on top.
A trio of two out walks proved costly as the Red Raiders turned it into a 2-1 lead. Jake Barrios battled to a 2-2 count and lined a single to center to drive in a pair of runs. Finnegan fought back and got a strikeout to end the inning.
TCU regained its one-run lead in the top of the second. Keaton Jones led off the frame with an infield single. He was standing on second with two outs when Boomer White doubled down the right field line to tie the game. After a walk to Witte, Paul Hendrix came through with a base hit up the middle to put the Frogs on top.
After retiring 10 straight batters, Finnegan ran into trouble in the fifth. A lead-off walk was followed by a bunt single to put the tying run on second with nobody out. Finnegan got Brett Bell to strikeout then gave way to Frey. The reliever did his job, getting an inning-ending 1-3-4 double play to strand the tying run.
The Frogs built a 5-2 lead in the sixth as they pushed across a pair of runs on three hits. Davy Wright was hit to open the inning and moved to third on a perfectly executed hit and run by Jerrick Suiter. Keaton Jones grounded out to make it a 4-2 game and Kyle Bacak followed with an RBI single to right field.
TCU tacked on two big runs in the top of the eighth inning to push the lead to five, 7-2. Keaton Jones singled with one out and moved to second on a walk to Cody Jones. A two-out wild pitch advanced both runners 90 feet and Brett Johnson delivered the two-run single through the right side.
The Red Raiders were not going to go quietly as they made serious noise with two outs in the eighth. A walk to Burleson started all the two-out trouble as the next three batters singled to make it a 7-3 contest. With the bases loaded, Nelson Randolph hit a hot shot up the middle that was speared by Trey Teakell for the final out of the inning.
With the win, TCU improves to 11-15 overall and 3-5 in Big 12 play. The Frogs will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon. Andrew Mitchell makes his second start of the season for TCU. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
