SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A five-run fifth inning by the San Diego State Aztecs propelled them to a 9-7 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs in the Mountain West Preseason Tournament Saturday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. TCU scored four times in the last three innings, but couldn't overcome the seven-run deficit. Donald Furrow and Dillon Farish tossed 4.1 scoreless innings for TCU.
The Aztecs struck for three runs on two hits and an error in the first inning. Quintin Berry drew a lead-off walk and scored the first run of the game on a Tim O'Brien sacrifice fly. A Paul Smyth triple made it 2-0 and he scored on a Brock Ungricht single. San Diego State tacked on another run in the top of the third on a Ungricht RBI triple to make it a 4-0 game.
The Horned Frogs cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning. Matt Vern reached base on a wild pitch and moved to second on a throwing error by the catcher to lead off the inning. Corey Steglich followed with a walk and a Bryan Kervin base hit loaded the bases with only one out. Steven Trout drew a bases loaded walk to score their first run and Chad Huffman reached on a fielder's choice, driving in the second run of the inning.
San Diego State broke the game open in the fifth inning as they scored five times with two outs. Ungricht got the rally started with a base hit. Jordan Swaydan drove in two with a bases loaded single and Berry cleared the bases with a double to make it a 9-2 contest.
TCU got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Steglich led off the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a Ryan Pack ground out. Bryan Kervin grounded out to drive in the Frogs third run of the game.
Matt Vern led off the seventh inning with a base knock. A Ryan Pack one-out single moved Vern to third and he scored on a Kervin sacrifice fly to make it a 9-4 ballgame.
TCU inched closer in the eighth inning as the Aztecs struggled to find the strike zone. The Frogs drew three bases loaded walks to pull the game within 9-7, but left the bases loaded. Huffman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Matt Carpenter walked and Keith Conlon singled to load the bases with no outs. Hunt Woodruff, Vern and Pack all drew walks. San Diego State closer Adam Simon got the final two batters out to leave the bases loaded.
Brad Furnish (1-5) took the loss for the Frogs as he surrendered nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits. He walked four and struck out seven in 4.2 innings pitched. Donald Furrow pitched 3.1 scoreless innings for TCU as he retired all 10 batters he faced, including two strikeouts.
The Frogs (14-15, 2-1 MWC) will wrap up play in the tournament Sunday morning when they face Air Force. First pitch is slated for 11:30 a.m. (CST).
