San Francisco Steals 4-3 Win Sunday
April 7, 2013
FORT WORTH - San Francisco scored two runs in the top of the ninth to rally for the series win with a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon. Cody Jones led the Horned Frog offense with three hits.
A base hit and an error had the Dons on their way in the ninth inning with TCU clinging to a 3-2 lead. Bradley Zimmer dropped a single into left field, tying the game at three. With one out and runners on the corners, the Dons put a delayed steal in motion. TCU picked off the runner at first, but the relay home was too late and Jason Mahood slid home with the eventual game-winning run.
San Francisco missed an opportunity to take and early lead in the game as it loaded the bases with only one out in the first. Andrew Mitchell struck out the final two batters of the inning to hold the Dons at bay.
After escaping another mini-jam in the third, the Frogs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. Keaton Jones worked a lead-off walk and moved to second on a Kyle Bacak sacrifice. A walk to Cody Jones put two on for White. The second baseman made a diving stop on a ball up the middle and got the runner at second, but the relay back to first bounced away, allowing Keaton Jones to score the first run of the game.
The Dons fought back in the fifth inning, taking a 2-1 lead. An error and a base hit had two on with only one out. Zachary Turner lined a double to right center, giving the Dons the lead.
TCU erased the deficit in the bottom of the seventh to regain its lead. Bacak and Cody Jones reached on back-to-back singles with one out. White hit a bouncer to the pitcher. His throw to second in an attempt to start a double play sailed into center field, allowing Bacak to score the tying run. The center fielder's throw back to the infield was wild, allowing Jones to race home for the lead.
The Frogs battled to preserve the one-run cushion in the eighth as San Francisco loaded the bases with one out. Riley Ferrell (0-2) got a big strikeout for the second out and then got a grounder to end the inning with the lead still in tact.
Mitchell started for TCU and went four-plus innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits. Mitchell walked two and struck out a season-high nine in the no-decision. Alex Young allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Ferrell was touched for two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk. Justin Scharf record the final three outs of the ninth.
TCU falls to 14-18 overall with the loss. The Frogs will continue their homestand Wednesday night when they host Stephen F. Austin. First pitch is set for 6:30.
