April 9, 2010
HOUSTON, Texas - An offensive outburst guided the 11th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs to a 15-1 victory over Houston Friday night. The Frogs pounded out 16 hits, led by four-hit, four RBI nights from Josh Elander and Jantzen Witte. The freshmen combined for eight RBIs and five runs scored. Witte collected his first career home run in the victory.
The offensive outburst over-shadowed a tremendous job on the mound by four pitchers. Matt Purke (4-0) allowed one run on five hits in five innings of work. The freshman struck out five and didn't walk a batter in the victory. Greg Holle (one inning, one strikeout), Walker Kelly (two innings, four strikeouts) and Erik Miller (one inning, one strikeout) combined to pitch the final four innings.
Along with Elander and Witte's outstanding offensive night, Jerome Pena notched two RBIs and Aaron Schultz finished with a 2-for-4 night to go along with three RBIs. Jimmie Pharr walked three times and scored each time, finishing the night 1-for-3.
A lead-off walk in the second sparked the Frogs as they struck for three runs on three hits to take the lead. Back-to-back one-out base hits by Brance Rivera and Witte loaded the bases for the Frogs. Schultz worked a walk to drive in the first run of the game and Pena made it a 3-0 game with a two-run single.
Houston scored its lone run in the bottom of the second on a two-out single of the bat of Austin Gracey to make it a 3-1 contest.
Back-to-back walks to open the third ended Houston starter William Kankel's (1-3) evening. Elander greeted the new pitcher with a screaming line-drive double to the left-center field gap to make it a 5-1 lead. Witte's first RBI of the night was a sacrifice fly that plated Elander to make it a 6-1 contest.
Jason Coats sparked another two-run inning in the fourth with his sixth home run of the season, an opposite field shot that pushed the lead out to 7-1. Matt Curry worked his second walk in as many innings and scored on a triple off the bat of Elander.
Witte led off the fifth with a base hit and scored on line-drive home run off the bat of Schultz, his second of the season, for a 10-1 lead.
In the sixth, the first four batters reached and scored as the Frogs extended their lead to 14-1. Pharr walked for the second time in the game and moved to second on an Elander base hit. Kyle Von Tungeln collected an RBI pinch-hit single to plate Pharr. Witte connected for his first career home run, a three run shot that scored Elander and von Tungeln.
TCU scored its final run of the game in the seventh inning. Joe Weik hit a pinch-hit double and scored on a two-out base hit off the bat of Elander.
The Frogs improve to 21-7 on the season. Game two of the three-game set will be Saturday night at Cougar Field. Kyle Winkler will toe the rubber for the Frogs as he goes for win No. 5 on the year. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
