TCU Powers Past Kansas, 5-2
April 11, 2014
LAWRENCE, Kan. - TCU hit three home runs and rallied for a 5-2 victory in the series-opener at Kansas Friday night. Kevin Cron posted his first career multi-home run game and drove in three to help lead the Horned Frogs to victory.
Brandon Finnegan improved to 6-2 on the season with five innings of work. He allowed two runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out four. Trey Teakell pitched the Frogs into the eighth inning, giving up a hit and walking a batter in 2 2/3 innings. Riley Ferrell retired all four batters he faced, including striking out the side in the ninth, to pick up his fifth save of the year.
Kansas put the pressure on early as they had three base runners on two hits and a walk in the first. TCU alertly turned a double play on a sacrifice attempt, throwing out the runner trying to advance to third on the play. A two-out walk would have easily scored on a double from Connor McKay, but the ball bounced over the right field fence for a ground rule double, forcing the runner to return to third. Finnegan got out of the jam with a strikeout.
The Jayhawks cashed in with two runs on four hits in the second. The first two batters singled and Ka'iana Eldredge put the Jayhawks in front, 1-0. Keaton Jones made a run-saving stop for the second out, but Colby Wright came through with a two-out single to push the lead to two.
TCU got the game tied up in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Boomer White bounced a single through the right side. Cron battled to a 2-2 count and launched his third home run of the season well over the left field fence to tie the game at two.
White and Cron hit back-to-back home runs to open up the sixth inning as the Horned Frogs took a 4-2 lead.
After the shaky start to the game, Finnegan settled down and pitched three scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen. Teakell pitched around a one-out walk in the seventh and a one-out double in the eighth.
TCU added a run in the ninth to account for the final score, 5-2. Kyle Bacak singled with one out and moved to second on a walk to Cody Jones. A Derek Odell base hit loaded the bases and White drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly.
With the victory, TCU improves to 21-12 overall and 6-4 in Big 12 play. Game two of the series is set for Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Preston Morrison will make the start for the Horned Frogs. The game will be aired live on ESPN3.
