Chris Neuman Powers Frogs Past UTA, 4-3
April 14, 2004
Fort Worth, Texas - The Horned Frogs avoided the season sweep by Texas-Arlington as they topped the Mavericks, 4-3 on Wednesday night at Lupton Stadium. Chris Neuman led off the seventh inning with his fifth home run of the season to lead the Frogs to victory.
TCU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Chad Huffman singled with two outs and scampered to third on a Michael Garza wild pitch. Shelby Ford struck out, but the ball skipped away from catcher Dane Ryan and Huffman scored the go-ahead run.
UTA tied the game in the top of the second on a Daniel Lenihan double and took the in the third on a RBI single by Darrell Preston, but the Frogs stormed back in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead.
The Frogs plated two runs in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a hit as they took advantage of a costly error by Preston. Maverick starter Garza walked two batters with one out in the inning and both scored to give the Frogs a 3-2 lead.
Two TCU errors in the fifth inning allowed the Mavericks tie the game at three, but that was all the Mavericks would get as the TCU bullpen kept the base runners to a minimum.
Chad Underwood found himself in trouble in the top of the seventh as Aaron Batlle singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a Kasey Baker sacrifice. After a hard line-out to third, Paul Bruder popped a pitch up in foul ground. The ball looked to be heading out of play but Neuman made a great catch with the ball on the other side of the fence to end the inning.
Neuman led off the bottom of the inning for the Frogs and muscled the pitch over the right field fence and giving TCU the 4-3 lead that they would hold the rest of the game.
Tim McGough came on in the ninth inning with a runner on first and got Baker to ground into a game-ending double play to pick up his first save of the season.
Underwood (4-3) pitched 3.2 innings in relief of Chase Perry who went three innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four.
The Frogs (20-14) will hit the road for a four-game road swing. They will face USF in a three-game conference series beginning on Friday. Game time in Tampa is set for 6:00 p.m.
