TCU Sweeps Away No. 4 Texas, 3-1
April 19, 2014
AUSTIN, Texas - The TCU baseball team rallied with three late runs to complete the sweep of No. 4 Texas at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Riley Ferrell collected his third save of the weekend and Dylan Fitzgerald drove in two runs to lead the Horned Frogs.
Tyler Alexander was touched for a first inning run but settled in to pitch five innings in the no-decision. He allowed six hits and struck out one. Trey Teakell (2-0) threw 2 1/3 scoreless frames, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out two. Travis Evans and Alex Young each retired the only batters they faced.
Entering the seventh inning, TCU was in a 1-0 deficit and had seen a couple opportunities to tie the game go by the wayside. The Frogs finally cashed in on their chances with two runs on three hits in the seventh.
Kevin Cron got the inning started with a base hit. He was erased on a fielder's choice, but Jerrick Suiter was able to move into scoring position on a wild pitch with only one out. Dylan Fitzgerald came through with an RBI double to right to tie the game. Garrett Crain gave TCU the lead with a two-out single through the left side.
The Frogs added a big insurance run in the ninth to push the lead to two. Suiter led off the frame with a base hit and scored on an opposite field double from Fitzgerald to make it a 3-1 game.
Texas made it interesting in the ninth as it loaded the bases on a walk and two hits. After issuing the lead-off walk, Ferrell struck out C.J. Hinojosa for the first out. Back-to-back singles followed loading the bases. The sophomore right-hander dug deep and got Andy McGuire to bounce into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play to collect his ninth save of the season.
The Longhorns took a 1-0 lead in the first on two hits and a hit batter. Brooks Marlow led off the inning with a base hit. Two batters later the bases were loaded for Collin Shaw who grounded out to drive in the Longhorns first run of the series. Alexander minimized the damage as he got Hinojosa to fly out to end the inning.
TCU's first opportunity to get back in the game came in the third after a one-out double from Crain. He was standing at third after a Kyle Bacak sacrifice, but Nathan Thornhill got a strikeout to end the inning.
Alexander wiggled off the hook in the fourth as the Longhorns had runners on the corners with only one out. The freshman fanned Zane Gurwitz for the second out then got Kacy Clemens to ground out to end the inning.
Another opportunity for TCU to tie the game came and went in the sixth. Bacak was hit with one out. Defensive indecision by the Longhorns on a one-hopper back to the mound put two on with only one out. Thornhill once again rose to the occasion and retired two straight to get out of the inning.
With the sweep, TCU improves to 26-13 overall and 10-5 in league play. The Frogs will wrap up the road swing Tuesday night with a non-conference tilt against Texas Tech in Abilene on the Abilene Christian campus. Game time against the Red Raiders is set for 6 p.m.
