Frogs Power Their Way Past Saint Louis, 12-5
April 24, 2004
Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs guaranteed the series win as they continued their dominance over the Saint Louis Billikens. The Frogs smashed six home runs in the contest as they topped the Bills, 12-5. German Duran drove in a career-high six runs with a 3-for-5 performance, including two home runs. J.J. Estrada also smoked two home runs in the victory.
For the second game in a run, the Billikens got an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out single by Kyle Wort. Kyle Dahlberg ended the inning as he threw out Wort trying to steal second base.
The Frogs tied the game at one in the bottom of the third on Duran's first hit of the night that scored Dahlberg. The Billikens responded, regaining the lead in the fourth on a solo home run by Jon Greenwich to right field.
TCU tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Shelby Ford's 12th home run of the season. Ford drilled the ball to straight-away center field to tie the game at two, but the Billikens stuck around scoring two runs in the top of the fifth to take the largest lead of the game at 5-3.
The seesaw battle continued in the bottom of the inning as the Frogs plated three runs to take a 6-5 lead. Estrada led off the inning, reaching base on an error by the third baseman. Dahlberg singled for the second time to put two runners on for the Frogs. Duran cleared the bases with his first of two home runs, a three-run shot that sailed over the left field fence.
The Billikens would tie the game at six in the sixth inning, but that was as close as they would get as the Frogs scored seven runs in their final three at-bats of the game to cruise to the victory.
Estrada and Austin Adams teamed up in the sixth inning to give the Frogs an 8-6 lead as Estrada drilled a two-run shot to left after Adams had reached on a one-out double. Chad Huffman made it 9-6 with a lead off home run in the seventh.
Two, two-run home runs in the eighth by Duran and Estrada put the game out of reach, giving Chad Underwood his sixth victory of the season in relief.
Clayton Jerome started for the Frogs, pitching five innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out eight and walking four. Underwood allowed only an unearned run in his four innings of work. He struck out four in the winning effort.
TCU improves to 25-15 overall and 11-6 in Conference USA action. The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon as the Frogs send Ryan Weems to the mound to face the Billikens Ryan Bird.
