Frogs Win Rubber Match, 8-3 Over Charlotte
April 24, 2005
Charlotte, N.C. - The No. 30 TCU Horned Frogs won their sixth Conference USA series of the season as they took game three 8-3 over the Charlotte 49ers. Matt McGuirk continued his tear as he was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and his first career two home run game. The Frogs got solid pitching from Brad Furnish, Chad Underwood and Shawn Ferguson to win their 27th game of the season. The offense stayed as hot as they pounded out 14 more hits in the contest.
McGuirk got the ball rolling for TCU in the second inning. He extended his season-long hit streak to nine games with his sixth home run of the season to lead off the inning. The Frogs would loade the bases following the home run, but were unable to push across anymore runs as Charlotte starter Adam Mills got Shelby Ford to fly out to end the inning.
With one out in the third inning, Furnish drilled John Stallings in the back. After a sacrifice moved Stallings to second, Adam Willard drove a ball to center field that plated Stallings with the tying run. Furnish was able to work his way out of the inning without any more damage and after three the game was knotted a one.
The tie didn't last as Andrew Walker jumped all over the first pitch he saw leading off the fourth inning. He laced a ball over the left center field fence for his 11th home run of the season. The hits kept coming as Austin Adams, Stuart Musslewhite and Ford hit back-to-back singles to make it a 3-1 game. A Keith Conlon single made it 4-1. McGuirk rounded out the inning with his second home run of the contest, a line drive shot to right that made it 7-1.
The 49ers picked up a run on three hits in the bottom of the inning to make it a 7-2 contest, but once again Furnish wiggled off the hook, getting O'Brien Taylor to line out to J.J. Estrada with two on to get out of the inning.
The Frogs pushed across another run in the top of the sixth. Musslewhite led the inning off with a base knock and scampered around to third on a double off the bat of Ford chasing Mills from the game. Charlotte reliever B.J. Hagen got a crucial out, but Conlon ripped a single through the drawn-in infield to make it 8-2.
Underwood had an outstanding day in relief for the Frogs, facing only one batter over the minimum in his three innings of work. He retired the last seven batters he faced and picked up two strikeouts. In the ninth inning, Ferguson allowed a run on three hits, but worked out of a bases loaded jam, striking out the final two batters he faced.
In his fifth win of the season, Furnish went five innings, surrendering just two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out six.
The Frogs improve to 27-13 overall and 13-5 in Conference USA play. TCU will return home for a six-game homestand which begins on Tuesday. The Frogs will host UT-Pan American for two mid-week games. First pitch Tuesday is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
