Winning Streak Reaches Six Friday
April 25, 2014
FORT WORTH - TCU took advantage of three Cal State Northridge errors to score three unearned runs en route to a 6-2 win Friday night. The win stretches the Horned Frogs winning streak to six games.
Brandon Finnegan allowed a hit and struck out a batter in 2 2/3 innings of work. Trey Teakell (3-0) earned the win in relief after allowing an unearned run on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Alex Young picked up his first save of the season after giving up a run on four hits and striking out four in four innings of work.
Boomer White kick started a two-out rally in the first with a base hit. Kevin Cron followed with a double to left to put two runners in scoring position. A passed ball allowed White to race home for a 1-0 lead.
The Matadors picked up an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the third to tie the game at one. William Colantono doubled with two outs to get things going for the Matadors. Ranny Lowe hit a high chopper off the plate and the throw to first bounced into foul territory, allowing the tying run to score.
TCU wasted no time regaining the lead after Derek Odell worked a lead-off walk. With one out, Kevin Cron walked. Odell took off before ball four was thrown and the catcher threw to second, but the throw sailed into center field allowing Odell to reach third. A double steal attempt was thwarted as Cron was thrown out at second, but on the play Odell scored to make it a 2-1 game.
With one out in the sixth, Garrett Crain launched his first career home run to give the Frogs a 3-1 lead.
The Matadors put the pressure on in the seventh as they loaded the bases on a walk, a hit batter and a base hit with one out. Young looked to be out of the jam with a double play ball, but an error kept the inning alive and allowed a run to score to make it a 3-2 game. Odell threw out the runner at home on a fielder's choice for the second out followed by a strikeout to end the inning.
Defensive miscues in the bottom of the seventh helped TCU open up a four-run cushion. With one on and one out, Cody Jones swiped second base and moved to third on an Odell base hit. White made it a 4-2 game with a base hit to left. A misplay in left allowed both base runners to move up 90 feet. Cron flied out to right field for the second out, but the relay back to the infield skipped into the dugout, allowing two runs to score for a 6-2 lead.
The victory pushes TCU's record to 28-13 overall. The Horned Frogs and the Matadors will square off in game two of the series Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Preston Morrison will make the start for the Frogs.
