Final Stats

PROVO, Utah - The TCU Horned Frogs scored 12 times in the middle innings and cruised to a 12-6 victory over BYU Thursday night at Miller Field. Jerome Pena drove in four and Kyle Winkler fanned 13 to help lead the Frogs to victory.

Kyle Winkler (8-1) was brilliant in his 11th start of the season. He gave up just five hits, issued one walk and struck out 13 in seven innings of work. Tony Rizzotti was touched for four runs on three hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning. Teddy Nowell gave up two runs (one earned) in an inning of work. Nick Frey struck out the only batter he faced.

After going down in order in each of the first three innings, the Horned Frogs bats came to life in the fourth as they scored twice on three hits. With one out, Jantzen Witte moved to second on a balk. A base hit by Taylor Featherston put runners on the corners. Jason Coats put the Frogs up 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to center. Josh Elander singled and Zac Jordan walked to load the bases. A passed ball gave the Frogs a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars threatened to get the runs right back in the bottom of the frame. Jaycob Brugman singled and moved to third on a double by Ryan Bernal with only one out. Winkler buckled down and froze Austin Hall on a 3-2 pitch then got Alex Wolfe to ground out to end the inning, preserving the 2-0 TCU lead.

TCU opened the floodgates in the fifth as it sent 10 men to the plate and scored six times to take a commanding 8-0 lead. All six of the runs came after there were two outs in the inning. Jantzen Witte started the rally with a hit. A base hit by Featherston followed and walk to Coats loaded the bases. Elander made it 3-0 with a bases loaded walk.

BYU looked to be out of the inning on a ground ball to third off the bat of Jordan, but an error kept the inning alive and made it a 4-0 contest. Jerome Pena made the error hurt with a bases-clearing double to left center that opened up a 7-0 contest. The Cougars went to the bullpen and Joe Weik greeted the newcomer with a base hit up the middle to cap the scoring in the inning.

The runs kept coming as the Frogs scored four more times in the sixth inning to make it a 12-0 game. Brance Rivera walked to open the inning and moved to second on a Witte base hit. Featherston doubled to drive in Rivera and a wild pitch plated Witte. Coats singled in the third run of the inning and Pena hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the fourth run of the frame.

The Cougars batted around and scored five times in the eighth to make it a 12-5 contest. A Brugman single drove in the Cougars first run of the game. The big blow was a two-run double off the bat of Dillon Robinson to make it 12-4. An error that would have ended the inning plated the fifth run of the frame.

A walk and three hit batters in the ninth made it a 12-6 ball game, but Frey came on and fanned the final batter of the game to lock up the victory for TCU.

TCU improves to 30-13 on the season and 14-2 in league play. The teams will square off in game two of the series Friday night at 7 p.m (CST). BYU-TV will air the game live.
