TCU Stifled In 6-2 Loss At Oklahoma State
May 6, 2011
STILLWATER, Okla. - The No. 8 TCU Horned Frogs had a chance to tie the game late, but No. 16 Oklahoma State escaped the jam and went on to hand the Frogs a 6-2 loss. Josh Elander hit his third home run of the season in the loss.
A solo home run by Josh Elander to lead off the second inning briefly put the Frogs on top. The Cowboys responded with two outs in the bottom of the second as Mark Ginther hit an inside-the-park home run to tie the game.
In the third, Luis Uribe led off the inning with a home run to put the Cowboys up 2-1. Back-to-back hits followed, then a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position with nobody out. Winkler worked out of the jam, getting a strike out for the first out. Jantzen Witte made a head's up play to throw home on a grounder for the second out and a fly ball to end the inning.
OSU added to its lead in the fourth inning, picking up a two-out run to make it a 3-1 game. Uribe singled to right to plate David Duren, who had reached on a lead-off single.
TCU inched closer with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Zac Jordan lined a double to the gap in right center. The center fielder kicked the ball, allowing Jordan to go all the way to third. Jerome Pena battled to a 2-2 count and lined a sacrifice fly to drive in Jordan to make it a 3-2 contest.
The Horned Frogs had a golden opportunity to tie the game and possibly take the lead in the eighth inning, but couldn't find a hit when they needed it. Witte led off the inning with a base knock and moved to second on an infield single from Jason Coats. The Cowboys went to the bullpen and Chris Marlowe issued a four-pitch walk to Elander. He atoned for the walk with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Oklahoma State translated the momentum from escaping the jam into a devastating three-run bottom of the eighth. The big blow was a two-out, two-run double by Zach Johnson that made it a 6-2 ballgame.
TCU falls to 31-14 on the season. The two teams will square off in game two of the series Saturday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
