Utah avoids sweep with 6-3 win over TCU
May 7, 2006
FORT WORTH, Texas - Utah starting pitcher Lucas Trinnaman kept the TCU offense off balance all day as the Frogs dropped a 6-3 decision to the Utes Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. TCU scattered 10 hits in the games but stranded nine runners and managed just three runs. Austin Adams went 3-for-4 at the plate and Bryan Kervin and Corey Steglich each added a pair of hits in the loss.
Utah came out the box swinging, manufacturing a run in the opening frame. Ute shortstop Ryan Khoury led off the game with a single to center and promptly stole second base before moving to third on a groundout to second. Just two pitches later, Khoury scored the first run of the game when Jay Brossman grounded out to Kervin at short.
The Frogs responded quickly adding a tally of their own in the bottom of the inning. Kervin opened the frame with a sharply-hit double down the right-field line and scored on a single to right by Steven Trout. Trinnaman, however, was able to pitch himself out of the jam, getting two fly outs and a strikeout.
After Sam Demel picked up three quick outs in the top of the second, the Frogs' offense was able to scratch across another run in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Vern led off with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on a picture-perfect bunt single by Corey Steglich. Ryan Pack took a pitch off his leg to load the bases before Kervin grounded into a double-play that allowed Vern to score. The threat was put to rest when Steven Trout smoked a line-drive that Khoury was able to jump and snare.
Utah answered quickly, tying the game with a run in the third and taking the lead for good with two more in the fourth. The Utes lead-off batter reached for the third consecutive inning, as Adam Frank poked Demel's first pitch to center for a single. Brossman knocked him in four batters later with a two-out single. In the fourth, Bret Baldwin drove a double off the wall in center to open the frame. Joe Mozeleski singled in Baldwin and later scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice bunt by Tyler Kmetko to put Utah up 4-2.
Steven Trout pulled the Frogs within a run the next inning with his second RBI of the game. Pack was hit for the second time in the game and moved to third on a Kervin single. Trout pushed a bunt down the first-base line and Pack raced home.
The Utes added two more runs, one in both the fifth and eighth innings to take a comfortable three-run lead, 6-3. TCU wasted a lead-off double from Adams in the eighth and Brad Devore retired six of the seven Frog hitters that he faced to close the game and earn his sixth save of the season.
Demel (5-5) made it through six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. He walked three and struck out three on 110 pitches. Shawn Ferguson had a solid outing in relief, striking out two in 1.2 innings of perfect work.
The Frogs' record moves to 28-21, 14-5 MWC with the loss, while the Utes improve to 23-22 on the year and 6-10 in conference action. TCU takes a break from Mountain West play, as it hosts UT-Pan American in a three-game series next weekend.
