UAB Wins Series, Takes Rubber Game 10-2
May 9, 2004
Fort Worth, Texas - The UAB Blazers took the rubber match of the series Sunday at Lupton Stadium as they topped the Horned Frogs 10-2. The Blazer pitching staff held the Frogs in check as they were only able to muster seven hits in the game. UAB jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. Chad Huffman led the Frogs at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance.
After a scoreless first inning, UAB took off in the second inning, scoring four times on three hits and two costly TCU errors. Zac Ward put the Blazers up 2-0 with a double to deep center and Eugene Rodriguez made it 4-0 with a two-run single. Seth Rollin delivered a two-run home run in the third inning to make it 6-0 UAB after three.
Another run in the fourth by UAB made the score 7-0, while the Frogs had yet to collect their first hit of the contest.
TCU finally scratched across runs in the bottom of the fourth when Blazer starter Grant Addison struggled to find the strike zone. He loaded the bases with one out on two walks and a hit-by-pitch. German Duran drew a bases loaded walk to plate Shelby Ford with the Frogs first run of the game, ending Addison's day. Eric Roberts, in relief, walked the first batter he face as J.J. Estrada picked up the second bases-loaded walk of the inning to plate Huffman. The Blazers caught a break as a ball hit by Kenny Thompson bounced up and hit Estrada in the leg to get UAB the second out in the inning. After a pop out, the Frogs rally was halted and UAB was leading 7-2.
The Frogs had a golden opportunity go for naught as they loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but Roberts was able to work out of the jam, striking out the side to leave the bases loaded for the second time in the game.
Roberts and Ryan Huffman for the Blazers quieted the Frogs the rest of the way as they were unable to mount a rally. UAB put up two runs in the sixth and one more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Head coach Jim Schlossnagle was ejected from the game in the seventh inning arguing on a hit batter call. Ford was smoked in the elbow by a pitch from Roberts, but home plate umpire Bob Gaddey ruled he leaned into the pitch and called Ford back to the plate.
With the loss, the Frogs fall to 29-19 overall and 15-9 in conference action. TCU returns to the diamond on Tuesday night for a make-up game with Dallas Baptist. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
