May 16, 2014
WACO, Texas - Another eight-inning gem from Preston Morrison helped the No. 9 TCU Horned Frogs get back in the win column with a 5-0 victory over Baylor Friday night. TCU collected its 14th shutout of the season, setting a new Big 12 Conference record.
Morrison gave up just three hits in eight innings of work to improve to 8-3 on the season. The junior allowed just four base runners and faced 27 batters in his time on the mound. Along the way, he issued one walk and struck out six in the victory.
TCU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Derek Odell got things started with a one-out base hit. Boomer White was hit to put two on and a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet. Kevin Cron grounded out to put the Frogs on top. A passed ball allowed White to score the second run of the inning.
The Frogs tacked on another run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Dylan Fitzgerald opened the inning with a base hit and moved to third on an error by the second baseman on a sacrifice attempt from Keaton Jones. Baylor's third passed ball of the night allowed Fitzgerald to score the lone run of the inning.
Defensive miscues in the sixth helped the Frogs add to their lead. Cody Jones reached on a one-out error and stole second. Odell hit a towering fly ball that was lost in the high sky by the right fielder. It fell harmlessly for a double putting two on with one out. Boomer White hit a hot shot to the third baseman, who threw home only to see Jones get in a run down. Jones returned safely to third and with no fielders covering the bases, everyone was safe. Cron hit a sacrifice fly to put the Frogs in front, 4-0.
Morrison had faced just one over the minimum through six innings before issuing a lead-off walk in the seventh. A double to right put runners on second and third with nobody out. Morrison retired the next three batters on a pop up and a pair of grounders to keep the Bears off the scoreboard.
The Frogs pushed across its fifth run in the eighth. Bacak walked and moved to second on a Cody Jones bunt single. Odell loaded the bases with a base hit and White hit a towering sac fly to left to drive in Bacak.
Baylor threatened in the bottom of the ninth as it loaded the bases on two hits and a walk, putting the tying run in the on-deck circle with two outs. Travis Evans pitched out of the jam, getting a ground ball to third to end the game.
With the victory, TCU improves to 37-15 overall and 16-7 in Big 12 play. The Frogs will close out the regular season Saturday night as they wrap up the series with the Bears at 6:35. Tyler Alexander will make the start for the Frogs.
