TCU Takes Series With 7-1 Win
May 17, 2014
WACO, Texas - The No. 9 TCU Horned Frogs concluded the regular season with a 7-1 victory over Baylor Saturday night behind a strong pitching performance from Tyler Alexander. TCU won 23 of its final 26 regular season games.
Alexander (8-3) did his job on the mound as he tossed six inning, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. The seven Ks match his career-high set on March 23 against Texas Tech.
The bullpen pitched three scoreless frames to close out the contest. Alex Young retired all three batters he faced in the seventh. Trey Teakell struck out the side around an error and a hit in the eighth. Riley Ferrell hit the first batter he faced but got a double play and a strikeout to end the game.
With one swing of the bat the Frogs were on the board in the first. Derek Odell launched his first home run of the season over the right field fence to give TCU a 1-0 lead.
A one-out single from Cody Jones got the ball rolling for the Frogs in the third. Jones looked like he would be out trying to steal second, but the shortstop couldn't hold on to the ball and Jones was in scoring position with one out. Odell looped a single over the shortstop's head for an RBI single. On the relay home, Odell moved to second. A wild pitch had him standing on third and he scored easily on a sacrifice fly from Boomer White for a 3-0 lead.
Three one-out walks in the sixth had the Frogs in business again. TCU batted around and scored four times to break the game open. Dylan Fitzgerald dumped a single into left field to drive in Kevin Cron. The throw back to the infield got away, allowing Garrett Crain to score the second run of the frame. Keaton Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Jerrick Suiter. Kyle Bacak drove in the final run of the inning with a perfect bunt single down the third base line for a 7-0 lead.
Baylor took advantage of a one-out triple in the bottom of the sixth. A walk put runners on the corners for Adam Toth, who hit a grounder to second to drive in Baylor's lone run of the game.
The Bears threatened to climb back into the game in the eight after a one-out error. Nate Goodwin followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Teakell worked out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts to keep Baylor off the board.
TCU concludes the regular season with a 38-15 record and a 17-7 mark in the Big 12. The Frogs, who will be the No. 2 seed, open up play in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 against Baylor. The game will be televised on FOX College Sports.
