Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs got back to their winning ways as they defeated the Charlotte 49ers in the first game of three at Lupton Stadium on Thursday night. Clayton Jerome turned in a masterful performance in his final home start as he moved up on the career charts list. The victory gave him 27 career wins, which moved him into a second-place tie with former Frog Scott Atchison. With his 300th career strikeout in the fourth inning, Jerome moved into sole possession of third place on the career strikeouts list. He now has 302 career strikeouts.

TCU had a chance to get on the board in the first inning as 49ers starter, Justin Brown was a little wild. Brown hit Shelby Ford in the back with a pitch and a walk to Chad Huffman, but Brown settled in and induced a double play ball off the bat of Bo Cogbill.

The Frogs finally cracked the scoreboard in the third when the Frogs sent nine men to the plate and scoring five times. J.J. Estrada and D.J. Pokluda drew walks to lead off the inning and Ramon Moses laid down a perfect bunt to move the runners into scoring position. A Ford single up the middle gave the Frogs their first run of the night. Third baseman Adam Floyd booted a ball off the bat of Huffman allowing Pokluda to score. Cogbill delivered the big hit, a two-run single to put TCU in front 4-0. Austin Adams singled, driving in the fifth run of the inning.

Jerome sailed through the first five innings, but ran into some trouble in the sixth inning. The 49ers threatened to score as they had runners on the corners with only one out. Jerome buckled down and got right fielder Adam Willard to pop up and Jamie Rusco to fly out to end the inning.

The Frogs tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-0 lead. Chris Neuman led off the inning with a bunt single and move to third on a throwing error by the catcher, Randall Poplin. Kyle Dahlberg laced a double to the gap in left center to plate Neuman.

Charlotte got on the board in the seventh inning as Brian Scafe connected for a two-run home run, cutting the lead to 6-2, but they would get no closer as Jerome and Robbie Findlay shut the door, leading the Frogs to victory.

Jerome (8-4) went eight innings in his final home start, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out six.

The Frogs (31-23, 17-11) and the 49ers (20-30, 9-19) return to the diamond on Friday night for game two of the series. Eugene Espineli will get the call for the Frogs in a 7:00 game time at Lupton Stadium.
