FORT WORTH, Texas - In front of 4,280 fans, the sixth-ranked TCU Horned Frogs rolled to a 13-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield Thursday afternoon. Matt Purke pitched five solid innings to earn win No. 11 on the season and Jantzen Witte drove in three runs to pace the offensive attack.

Purke (11-0) gave up just one run on five hits and struck out five in five innings. Paul Gerrish tossed two scoreless frames as did Greg Holle. Gerrish surrendered one hit and walked two, while Holle retired all six batters he faced with two strikeouts.

The Frogs offense got rolling in the second inning as they picked up three runs on a pair of hits and three Roadrunner errors. Josh Elander was plunked with one out and raced around the bags on a double to the left center field gap off the bat of Aaron Schultz. Witte followed with a single and moved to second on an error by the left fielder. On the play, Schultz raced home for a 2-0 lead.

Witte's adventure on the base paths continued as the pitcher tried to pick him off at second only to see the ball sail into center field. The outfielder picked up the ball and overthrew third base, allowing Witte to score with the third run of the inning.

The Roadrunners picked up a run in the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles to open the inning. Purke settled down and retired the next three batters he faced to close out the inning.

TCU blew the game wide open in the bottom of the frame as it scored five times on three hits. Taylor Featherston started the inning with a base hit to right. He got all the way to third on an error in right field. Back-to-back walks to Elander and Schultz loaded the bases. Witte took a pitch off the shoulder to drive in the first run of the inning. Brance Rivera followed with a two-run single through the left side. Two straight ground outs from Bryan Holaday and Jason Coats accounted for the final two runs in the inning.

Another Featherston single in the fifth led to a 9-1 lead. A walk and a sacrifice bunt put Featherston on third and he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Witte.

TCU tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning on three hits, extending the lead to 11-1. Coming in off the bench, Jimmie Pharr doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a base hit by Matt Curry. After stealing second, Curry scored on Featherston's third hit of the ballgame.

Josh Elander's lone hit of the afternoon was a lead-off double in the seventh inning. He gave way to pinch runner Relly Mercurio, who scored on Witte's second sacrifice fly of the game to make it a 12-1 contest.

Joe Weik collected a pinch-hit single in the eighth and scored on a Mercurio two-out base hit.

The Frogs improve to 41-11 on the season. Game two of the three-game series is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday night. Kyle Winkler will toe the rubber for the Frogs and face Bakersfield's Brandon Van Dam.
