Frogs Fall In Regular Season Finale, 5-1
May 21, 2005
New Orleans, La. - The No. 1 Tulane Green Wave handed the Frogs their first Conference USA series loss of the season, ending the Frogs streak of 10 consecutive C-USA series won. The Frogs mustered only six hits in a 5-1 defeat to the Green Wave. The Frogs close out the regular season with an impressive 37-18 record and finish in a tie for second in Conference USA with a 20-10 record. Offensively, J.J. Estrada led the way with a 2-for-3 performance, while Andrew Walker drove in the lone TCU run, keeping the Frogs streak of not being shutout this season alive.
The Green Wave jumped out to the early lead in the first inning, scoring a run on two hits. Nathan Southard led off the inning with a double and advance to third on a wild pitch from TCU starter, Brad Furnish (5-5). Furnish struck out Brad Emaus, but gave up the RBI single to Brian Bogusevic. He retired the final two batters of the inning to keep the damage at a minimum.
Tulane kept the pressure on in the second inning, loading the bases with only one out. Furnish once again buckled down to freeze Emaus with his third strikeout of the game and getting the fly ball out to end the inning, stranding all three runners.
TCU had a golden opportunity in the third inning to dent the scoreboard, but Tulane starter, Micah Owings bore down to strike out the side. Estrada laced a one-out single up the middle and moved to second on a Shelby Ford single. After a wild pitch moved the runners up 90 feet, Owings walked Chad Huffman to load the bases. Matt McGuirk battled Owings, fouling off numerous pitches in the at-bat before Owings was able to strike him out, preserving the Tulane lead.
The Frogs were able to knot the game at one in their half of the fourth inning. Austin Adams drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Walker delivered with a two-out single to right center that plated Adams with the tying run.
The tie wouldn't hold as the Green wave pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Greg Dini provided the big blow with a two-out double to deep left field that sent two runners home, ending Furnish's day. Dini eventually scored on a Scott Madden RBI single.
The Green Wave picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh and the Frogs would only have two more base runners the rest of the way.
The Frogs will open up play in the Conference USA Tournament as the second seed. They will play the seventh-seeded Louisville Cardinals at 4:00 on Wednesday. The C-USA Tournament is being hosted by Southern Miss with all games being played at Pete Taylor Park.
