May 24, 2014
OKLAHOMA CITY - TCU advance to the Big 12 Championship game with a 4-1 victory over Baylor Saturday morning at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Horned Frogs scored two runs in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie en route to the victory.
Brandon Finnegan started for the Frogs, allowing a run on three hits and walking three in 4 2/3 innings. The junior retired the first 10 batters he faced and finished his outing with seven strikeouts. Trey Teakell (5-0) picked up the win in relief as he tossed three scoreless frames. Riley Ferrell retired all four batters he faced, including striking out the side in the ninth, to lock up his 13th save of the season.
Baylor starter Daniel Castano played with fire as he allowed the lead-off batter to reach in each of the first three innings. He escaped in the first two, but was not so lucky in the third. Cody Jones drew the lead-off walk and stole second. With two outs he was standing on third and scored easily on a base hit from Kevin Cron.
After sailing through the first three innings, Finnegan ran into trouble in the fourth as Lawton Langford reached on a one-out single. A walk followed to put the tying run in scoring position. With two outs, Grayson Porter tied the game with a base hit. Another walk loaded the bases, but Finnegan worked out of the jam with a fly ball to end the inning.
Baylor put together another threat in the fifth as it got a one-out walk to Nate Goodwin. A two-out base hit moved Goodwin to second forcing the Frogs to go to the bullpen. Teakell needed just two pitches to end the threat.
In the seventh, the Bears went to the bullpen and called on their closer, Josh Michalec. With one out, Boomer White launched a double to left field. Cron battled through a two-strike count before coming up with a base hit through the left side that drove in White for a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Jerrick Suiter lined the ball just past the outstretched glove of the second baseman to drive in Cron with an insurance run, 3-1.
The Frogs tacked on another run in the eighth as they took advantage of a lead-off base hit from Keaton Jones. A walk to Cody Jones moved Keaton Jones into scoring position for Derek Odell, who delivered a run-scoring single to push the lead to three, 4-1.
Baylor didn't go quietly as it made noise with two outs in the eighth. Adam Toth doubled and moved to third on a base hit from Porter. TCU again went to the bullpen and the move paid dividends as Ferrell needed just one pitch to get out of the inning.
With the victory, TCU improves to 41-15 overall. The Horned Frogs advance to the championship game and will play the winner of the Oklahoma State-Texas game at 4:30 on Sunday afternoon. The game will be televised nationally on FOX Sports 1. Tyler Alexander will take the mound for the Horned Frogs.
