Late Runs Doom TCU In 6-2 Loss To Ole Miss
June 1, 2012
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - A four-run eighth inning by Ole Miss broke a 2-2 tie and put TCU's season on the brink with a 6-2 loss. Kevin Cron drove in both runs for TCU.
TCU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kyle Von Tungeln led off the inning with a base hit and moved to third on a bloop single of the bat of Josh Elander. Kevin Cron grounded out to the first baseman to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead.
Cron again provided the offense for the Horned Frogs as he led off the fourth inning with his fourth home run of the season to give TCU a 2-0 lead.
From that point on, the Rebel pitching staff shut down the Frogs, while their offense came to life.
Ole Miss tied the game at two in the top of the sixth, scoring a run on a pair of hits. Tanner Mathis led off the inning with a single and scored on a triple off the bat of Alex Yarbrough. A ground out by Matt Snyder tied the game.
TCU dodged a bullet in the bottom of the seventh as the Rebels threatened to take the lead with a pair of runners in scoring position and only one out. A one-out walk followed by a double had the Rebels knocking on the door. A base running miscue on an attempted suicide squeeze helped the Frogs get the second out of the inning and Justin Scharf got the final out to keep it a 2-2 contest.
The wheels fell off for the Frogs in the eighth inning as the bullpen surrendered four runs on just two hits. A lead-off walk to Mathis was followed by a single by Yarbrough. Kevin Allen came on and got a strikeout for the first out, but then hit a batter and walked in the go-ahead run. Sikes Orvis delivered the big blow with a two-run single up the middle. An error on a potential double play ball made it a 6-2 contest.
Preston Morrison allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. He walked two and struck out five in the no-decision. Brandon Finnegan (3-4) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs on a hit and a walk.
TCU falls to 36-20 overall. The Frogs will play the loser of the Texas A&M/Dayton contest Saturday afternoon. First pitch will be 12:35 p.m. at Blue Bell Park. Andrew Mitchell will get the start for the Horned Frogs.
