Virginia Defeats DBU, 6-3

FORT WORTH, Texas -- After being postponed one day and delayed four hours, the opening game of the NCAA Fort Worth Regional commenced and resulted in a 6-3 win by Virginia over DBU Saturday at Lupton Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday, but due to severe storms and heavy rain in the Fort Worth area Friday and Saturday, first pitch was pushed back to 6:04 on Sunday.
Junior Derek Casey (5-2) earned the starting nod for the Cavaliers (43-14) and pitched allowed all three runs over seven innings of work. He allowed six hits and surrendered no walks while striking out three.
Virginia jumped on DBU starting pitcher Jordan Martinson (9-4) in the third inning. Justin Novak scored on an error, Andy Weber scored off the bat of Jake McCarthy and Adam Haseley drove in Ernie Clement. Novak went 2-for-2 on the day.
Martinson allowed all six runs, five earned, over 4.2 innings pitched.
DBU (40-20) got on the board in the fourth inning off the bat of Jameson Hannah. The sophomore hit his ninth home run of the season to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Sophomore Tim Millard homered in the fifth inning, his 12th of the season to cut Virginia's lead to 3-2.
Virginia scored three in the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly by Clement scored Novak and then Robbie Coman scored two on a double to left field.
The Patriots rallied late. Sophomore Garrett Wolforth homered to right center in the eighth inning. The tying run came to the plate in the top of the ninth inning, but Virginia closer Tommy Doyle stuck out Camden Duzenack for his 13th save of the season.
DPU will play the loser of TCU and Central Connecticut State Sunday at noon. Virginia will play the winner of the Horned Frogs and Blue Devils on Sunday at 4 p.m.
