June 5, 2017
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Austin Listi hit two home runs as DBU jumped out to an 11-1 lead on the way to an 11-8 win over Virginia Monday at Lupton Stadium.
DBU (42-20) advanced to play TCU in the finals of the NCAA Fort Worth Regional. The Patriots must beat the Horned Frogs two times to advance.
It was the second consecutive multi-homer game for the senior from Huffman, Texas. Listi hit two home runs in Sunday's 6-5 win over Central Connecticut State. At 24 home runs, Listi is the Patriots' all-time single season home run record holder. He went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs on Monday.
Listi wasn't the only Patriots player to go deep. Senior Camden Duzenack hit a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning for his 15th of the season.
DBU starter Ray Gaither (6-4) allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out six to earn the win. Virginia (43-16) starter Evan Sperling (3-3) failed to record an out and allowed four before turning the game over to the bullpen.
DBU led 9-1 after two innings and 11-3 after eight innings. The Cavaliers scored five runs in the top of the ninth including three off the bat of Pavin Smith, who hit a three-run home run to right centerfield. Pavin was 2-for-5 with five RBIs.
Trailing by three in the ninth inning, Virginia had runners at first and second with one out. However, Dalton Higgins recorded the next two outs to pick up his 14th save.
