Maxwell's Gem Leads Horned Frogs to Regional Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas - Steven Maxwell held the Baylor Bears scoreless over eight innings of action en route to leading the Horned Frogs to a 9-0 triumph in the championship game of the Fort Worth Regional on Sunday evening at Lupton Stadium.The victory gives TCU a school-record 49 victories on the season.
The 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year dominated the Baylor offense, allowing three hits to go along with 10 strikeouts and two walks in the contest. With the victory, Maxwell improved his record to 11-1 on the season.
In an early pitching duel between Maxwell and Baylor starter Craig Fritsch, both offenses failed to produce a run over the first four innings of action. The game changed in the top of the fifth inning when Jerome Pena walked followed by a Brance Rivera double down the left field line.
With runners on second and third with one out, Taylor Featherston connected on a triple down the right field line to score both Pena and Rivera to give TCU a 2-0 lead. Featherston would score on the next batter following a Bryan Holaday sacrifice fly to give the Frogs a 3-0 advantage.
Featherson - who was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the Fort Worth Regional - finished the evening with three hits, including a double and triple, to go along with two runs batted in and one run scored.
The Frogs added another run in the top of the seventh inning when Holaday walked then scored on the next batter when Jason Coats connected on a triple to right field to give TCU a 4-0 lead.
In the final frame, the Bears added four runs to take a 9-0 lead on the Bears following RBI hits by Kyle VonTungeln, Joe Witte and Schultz.
Fritsch suffered the setback after allowing four runs - all earned - on eight hits in 6.2 innings of action. The Baylor starter finished with a 5-4 overall record.
Offensively, the Bears finished with four hits in the game with two of them coming off the bat of third baseman Joey Hainsfurther.
With the victory, the Frogs improved to 49-11 and will advance to the Super Regional for the second consecutive season. The Bears concluded their season with a 36-24 record.
