TCU Opens CWS With 10-3 Win Over LSU
June 14, 2015
Morrison was outstanding in earning his 12th win of the season. The senior held the nation's fourth-best offensive team to a run on five hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five. Morrison retired the final 12 batters he faced before giving way to the bullpen for the final two innings.
TCU got a big boost from a defensive play in the third inning. Jared Foster reached on a one-out single and was standing on second with two outs. Jake Fraley looped a single into center field. Foster rounded third, but Cody Jones' throw to the plate was a perfect one-hopper to Evan Skoug, who corralled the ball and tagged out the potential go-ahead run to end the inning.
LSU's defense fell apart in the fourth as back-to-back throwing errors by the pitcher had runners on the corners with nobody out. Connor Wanhanen put the Frogs in front with a base hit up the middle. With two outs, Dane Steinhagen ripped a single to center field to push the lead to two, 2-0.
The Tigers cut the TCU lead in half in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back singles from Alex Bregman and Kade Scivicque put the tying runs on base. With one out and two in scoring position, Andrew Stevenson grounded out to second to make it a 2-1 game.
TCU broke the game open with a four-run fifth to push the lead to five, 6-1. Keaton Jones started the rally with a four-pitch walk. A base hit from Nolan Brown and a walk to Garrett Crain loaded the bases. Jeremie Fagnan was hit by the pitch to drive in a run, while the Tigers' third error of the game allowed Keaton Jones to score for a 4-1 lead. Wanhanen lined a single to right to drive in two more.
In the seventh, TCU batted around and scored four times to open up a 10-1 lead. After taking a pitch off the foot, Cody Jones created the Frogs' seventh run of the game with his feet. He stole two bases and scored on a bad throw to third by the catcher.
Wanhanen walked with two outs in the seventh to start the parade of Horned Frogs to the plate. Skoug won an 11-pitch at-bat with a base hit to put two on. Steinhagen's second hit of the game made it 8-1 and Derek Odell's second double of the game drove in two more.
LSU picked up a pair of runs on three hits in the eighth to account for the final score. Jared Foster hit a one-out, solo home run and Fraley scored on a two-out base hit from Scivicque.
TCU improves to 50-13 overall. The Horned Frogs advance in the winner's bracket and will face the victor of the Vanderbilt/Cal State Fullerton contest on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
