FORT WORTH – The TCU Horned Frog varsity team handed the Alumni a 9-1 loss in the annual Alumni game Saturday. Derek Odell and Evan Skoug highlighted the offensive onslaught with three hits each.

The starting lineup for the varsity squad featured six former Frogs who are still playing professional baseball. Jerome Pena and Taylor Featherston reunited in the middle of the infield and Matt Curry anchored first base. Jantzen Witte returned to his familiar spot at third base as did Kyle Von Tungeln in center field. Jason Coats and Dylan Fitzgerald flip-flopped in the outfield with Coats in right and Fitzgerald in left.

On the mound, the Alumni featured power arms like Jake Arrieta, Brandon Finnegan, Kyle Winkler, Trevor Seidenberger, Stefan Crichton and Lance Broadway.

Fans got a glimpse of four of the arms the varsity squad will feature this season. Mitchell Traver started and threw five innings. He allowed a run on two hits, walked two and struck out five. Brian Howard pitched two scoreless frames. Ryan Burnett retired all three batters he faced as did Preston Guillory.

The Varsity took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Odell started a two-out rally with a double. After a Skoug hit, Odell scored easily on a double from Garrett Crain.

The Alumni tied the game in the third as they took advantage of a lead-off double from Kyle Von Tungeln. He scored a batter later on a wild pitch to make it a 1-1 game.

The Varsity came right back in the bottom of the frame, picking up two runs on four hits. Odell led off the inning with a hit and scored on a Skoug base hit. Keaton Jones made it a 3-1 game with a two-out base hit to center.

A four-run fourth broke the game open. Skoug, Crain, Nolan Brown and Keaton Jones tallied RBIs in the frame as the varsity opened up a 7-1 lead.

Two more Varsity runs crossed the plate in the seventh to account for the final score.

The 2015 regular season kicks off on Friday when the second-ranked Horned Frogs host Southern Illinois. The season-opener is slated to start at 6:30 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
