Cragin, Babanova Named TCU Athletes of the Week

Cragin pitches six shutout innings, while Babanova collects three wins

FORT WORTH--TCU Athletics selected pitcher Taylor Cragin and tennis player Maria Babanova as its Student-Athletes of the Week for their dominating performances last week.

Senior Taylor Cragin pitched six shutout innings in a victory over fifth-ranked Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. He allowed only one hit while retiring 17-of-18 batters, including the first ten. Cragin post six strikeouts with no walks. His six innings pitched were a career high.

Sophomore Maria Babanova went 3-0 for the weekend with two doubles wins and a singles victory. In her first singles match of the season, Babanova defeated NC State's Jackie Ussery, 6-0, 6-0. Both doubles wins clinched the point for TCU, as Babanova played with two different partners. Alongside freshman Gaby Mastromarino, the tandem outlasted NC State's team of Sessoms/Ussery, 8-2. Paired with Nina Munch-Soegaard, the 53rd-ranked duo defeated Miami's pairing of Waibel/Kissell, 8-6.

Fresh off a series win over No. 5 Cal State Fullerton, the TCU Horned Frogs rose to No. 16 in the polls. They will open the 2009 home schedule Tuesday night when they host Dallas Baptist at 6:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Frogs' women's tennis heads to Texas Tech Thursday night to face the Red Raiders at 6:00.
