Frogs' Baseball Opens WAC Play

The TCU Horned Frogs (5-12) open the 2000 WAC season this weekend, when they host San Jose State (10-3, 2-1). The Spartans won two-of-three last weekend from Hawaii-Hilo and then defeated Stanford, 4-1, on Tuesday evening. The series will open with a single-game on Friday at 2:35 p.m., followed by single-games on Saturday and Sunday.

This is the 103rd edition of TCU baseball. The Frogs have an all-time mark of 1485-1285-25 for a winning percentage of .538. The Frogs are closing in on the 2800th game in school history and 1500 wins. TCU is only five games away from 2800 games and 15 wins from 1500.

The 2000 Horned Frogs are under the guidance of head coach Lance Brown (TCU, 1967). Brown, TCU's all-time winningest coach, surpassed the 400 win mark in TCU's 13-9 win over UTA. In his 14th season as the head coach at TCU, Brown has a record of 403-380. He is assisted by Donnie Watson, Barry Takahashi and Chris Connally.

When TCU and San Jose State get things started on Friday afternoon, it will be the ninth time the two teams have met between the lines... TCU trails in the overall series, 2-6-0... last season, TCU and San Jose State played five times and the Spartans were victorious in three of the contests... in the regular season series, TCU defeated San Jose State in the opener, 14-1... the Frogs were led by pitcher Scott Atchison, who recorded his ninth win of the year... the Spartans won the final two games, posting wins against Shawn Thompson and Chris Bradshaw... in the WAC Post Season Tournament, TCU and San Jose State met twice... the Spartans won the first game, 9-6, sending TCU into the losers' bracket of the tournament... the Frogs then defeated San Jose State, 10-6, eliminating the Spartans from the tournament and sending TCU to the championship round... Thompson has faced the Spartans three times, recording an 0-1 mark... Marshall Wilson hit .667 (6-9) with three doubles against San Jose State in 1999... this will be the first of six games against San Jose State... TCU will travel to San Jose on April 20-22 for a three-game set.... Lance Brown has a career record of 2-6 against San Jose State.

The Frogs are entering their fourth season in the WAC. TCU has compiled a record of 52-36, finishing second in all three seasons in the WAC. Rice is the only team in the WAC that has posted a better winning percentage than the Frogs. Last season, TCU ended conference play with a record of 19-10, advancing to the Championship game of the WAC Tournament.

Two of the three games this weekend can be heard on KTCU (88.7 FM) with Chuck LaMendola calling the play-by-play. Saturday's game against San Jose State will not be carried. Levi Groomer has reached base safely in his last eight plate appearances... against Dallas Baptist, Groomer was hit twice and singled three times... Groomer has been hit by a pitch in three consecutive games and five of the last six games overall... entering the San Jose State series, the Frogs lead the WAC in batting average and home runs... Tom Bates leads the league in batting average... beginning with the three games against San Jose State, TCU will play only five home games in the month of March... the Frogs will 10 games on the road... nine of TCU's first 12 WAC games are on the road... in TCU's 3-2 win over Lamar, the Frogs did not commit an error... a TCU starting pitcher has not won a game since TCU's 14-4 win over Texas Tech on February 15... in the last seven games, the starters' are 0-6 with one no decision... 11 of the 17 games this year have been decided by four runs or less... Ramon Moses has already recorded 58 assists in 15 games, but he has also committed nine errors... Shawn Thompson has 22 strikeouts in 26.1 innings, raising his career total to 282 24 behind record holder Scott Atchison... Thompson ranks third in K's and fifth in innings pitched with 281 innings... the Frogs have been outscored in the first inning by a margin of nine runs (23-14)
