Bulldogs knock off Baseball Frogs, 8-3
FORT WORTH, Texas (April 9) - Anthony Acevedo doubled home a pair of runs in the eighth inning to lead Fresno State to an 8-3 win over TCU Saturday at the TCU Diamond. Fresno State, ranked 17th by Collegiate Baseball, improves to 27-9 overall, 10-4 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Frogs drop to 13-25 overall, 4-9 in the WAC.
Fresno State jumped out to an early lead, scoring once in the first on a pair of hits, the biggest a two-out single by Brandon Gemoll. The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on Tom Creighton's two-out base hit that scored Ben Fritz.
The Frogs tied the game in the sixth when Brad Rogers singled and scored on Cade Harris' home run to right field. However, the Frogs would only score one more run as they stranded 11 men in the game. Shortstop Erick Macha led the Frogs with four hits. In the series, Macha has eight hits in 10 at-bats, but he has only crossed home plate twice.
Fresno State took the lead for good in the eighth, when they scored four runs on four hits. Acevedo's double drove in Tony Guzman and Oscar Lopez. Gemoll singled home Acevedo to chase starter Shawn Thompson. The senior righthander allowed six runs, five earned on seven hits in 7.1 innings. Fresno State added two more runs in the inning, both off of relief pitcher Chad Durham. Durham allowed three hits, two runs in his one inning pitched. He also committed an error, his fourth of the year.
In the series, Fresno State has scored 17 runs and 11 of those have crossed the plate in the final three innings of the two games.
Thompson did set two TCU career records in the contest as he made his 48th career start, surpassing Frank Johnstone. He also recorded six strikeouts in the game, raising his career total to 310 three more than Scott Atchison's career total of 307.
