Crain and Ferrell Earn Weekly Accolades
April 21, 2014
FORT WORTH - A pair of TCU baseball players were named Big 12 Players of the Week for their performances in helping the Horned Frogs to a 4-0 week, including a sweep of No. 4 Texas. Garrett Crain (Co-Player) and Riley Ferrell (Pitcher) were honored.
Crain led TCU with a .538 (7-for-13) batting average in four games last week with a team-best four RBI, a .615 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. In the weekend series against the Longhorns, Crain hit .400 (4-for-10) with two RBIs and a run scored.
He went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI against Houston Baptist on Tuesday. His first hit of the game came with two outs to give TCU a 2-0 lead in the second. In Thursday's 3-0 win, he was responsible for two of the three runs with a run scored and an RBI. His base hit gave TCU a 1-0 lead and he later scored to make it a 3-0 game. The junior went 1-for-4 in Friday's 2-0 win. Defensively, Crain made a diving catch on a line-drive to end the eighth on a ball that might have driven in two runs. In Saturday's win, he was 2-for-3 with an RBI. He drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh inning.
Ferrell made three appearances last week, all coming on the road at No. 4 Texas. He picked up the save in all three of TCU's wins in Austin. Ferrell allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out five in 3.1 innings of work.
In Thursday's 3-0 win, he retired the side in order in the ninth while recording two strikeouts. In Friday's 2-0 victory, he entered the game in the eighth with the tying run on base. He retired all four batters he faced and struck out two. In Saturday's 3-1 win, the sophomore earned the save getting one strikeout and a game-ending double play with the bases loaded. He pitched in three consecutive games for the first time in his career and was instrumental in helping TCU sweep Texas for the first time since 1994.
This is the second time this season the Horned Frogs have had a pair of recipients as Preston Morrison and Derek Odell were tabbed on April 7. Brandon Finnegan earned Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 17, while Jordan Kipper was named Newcomer of the Week on April 14.
